Elementary
School is excited to
have its TAG (Talented
and Gifted) group underway.
TAG group meets every day for
enrichment in all academics, with
the focus on reading, math, sci-
ence and social studies.
Recently, TAG students com-
pleted a novel study on “The Sea
Tayler Hatfield
of Monsters” by Rick Riordan, the
second book in the “Percy Jackson
and the Olympians” series.
Students completed interviews
on their iPads and created diora-
Morgan Milbrett
mas and topographical maps to go
along with the novel study.
“All the students put great effort
into their projects,” said teacher
Jody Brand. “They are motivated,
excited and eager to learn. It is so
great to be able to challenge,
enrich and see these students
flourish.”

Turn in LCC scholarship applications Thursday
Students preparing for
the 2016-17 college year
are encouraged to seek out
scholarships from many
resources.
Lane
Community
College Florence Center
encourages students from
all walks of life to partici-
pate in this process by pro-
viding nearly $48,000 in
scholarships to western
Lane County residents,
ranging from $500 to
$6,000 each.
Stop by LCC Florence
Center, 3149 Oak St., to
pick up a scholarship infor-
mation packet or visit
www.lanecc.edu/foundation
The applications for
scholarships from Florence
Ladies of Elks, B.P.O.E No.
1858, are due Saturday,
March 5. School counselors
can provide the application.
The Elks provide scholar-
ships and vocational training
to any graduating senior
from the high schools of
Siuslaw, Mapleton, Reed-
sport and Triangle Lake who
plans to attend an accredited
college, university, trade or
vocational program.
This year, awards in
amounts of $2,000 and
$1,000 are available.
Look for ... KID SCOOP
Kid Scoop runs every Wednesday during the school
year in the Siuslaw News and features educational sto-
ries and fun activities for families.
The activity page is part of the Siuslaw News’
Newspapers In Education program, in which teachers
from Siuslaw and Mapleton school districts may
request copies of the local paper to use as curriculum
in their classroom. Call 541-997-3441 for more info.

their pursuit of a better
life.
Even small scholarships
can return big benefits. As
many students bypass
applying for the small-
dollar awards, fewer appli-
cants translate to better
odds for success.
