WHITBURN —Ronald Arthur Whitburn, 86, of Florence, passed away Jan. 8, 2016, at P e a c e Harbor Hospital. Ronald Ron was Whitburn born in Detroit, Mich., on Dec. 3, 1929, and grew up on a farm in Parma, Mich. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force soon after high school and, while stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, met his wife of 64 years, Cecelia Margaret Wolfe. The couple married in Anchorage and moved to the San Jose area in California, where Ron graduated from Stanford University with a degree in engineering. He then landed a job with Hewlett Packard in Palo Alto, Calif., when the company was in its infancy, and spent the next 30 years traveling the world mar- keting for HP. The couple raised three beau- tiful daughters in California, with a two-year stint in Geneva, Switzerland. The family spent many won- derful vacations traveling to the Rocky Mountains, California beaches and to Mexico. Retirement brought them to Florence, where Ron loved spending time outdoors on the rivers and beaches and in the couple’s gardens. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and four grand- children. The family held a small memorial service Jan. 12, at Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home. Ron is resting at Pacific Sunset Cemetery, on the hill overlooking the town he loved. UNDERWOOD—Rex John Underwood, 70, of Florence, passed away Feb. 19, 2016, after a brief illness. He then became Chief of Anesthesiology at Kaiser Medical Center facilities in Portland, Ore., followed by multiple locum tenentes in var- ious locations around the United States. Music played a major role in Rex and Julie’s lives, as violin- ist and cellist, respectively. They had the opportunity to travel the world extensively, which started with Rex’s volun- teer work teaching anesthesia in underserved countries. They enjoyed living on the Siuslaw River since retirement in 1995, and their devoted fel- lowship at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, where a memorial celebration will be held Saturday, March 12, at 11 a.m. Remembrances can be made to Saint Andrew’s Church or a charity of your choice. She was born in Jerome, Idaho, to Alphonso and Melvina White, and was one of nine siblings: Jim, Alford, Ada, Ida, Elly, Tom, Patty and Peggy. Shirley moved to Florence in the early 1950s and married Bob Barrett, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons: Mike, and his wife Debbie; Kurt, and his wife Michelle; Bob, and his wife Ronda; and daughter Cheryl Hoile (hus- band Terry); 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Shirley devoted her life to caring for her husband and rais- ing her children, the loves of her life. She loved spending time with family and friends, always had a smile and visited with everyone. Her second love was sweets! At meal time, dessert was her first priority and was always encouraged, especially if it was white cake with white icing. Until recent years, prior to her declining health, Shirley enjoyed traveling — and recalled her road trip to Vegas with her daughter, Cheryl, and granddaughter, Angella, as one of her “best ever.” Shirley’s wonderful smile and friendliness will truly be missed and she will always be in our hearts. A private family service was held with Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
