Hostess Sally Wantz started the evening off by tossing out packets of kleenex to those in attendance. They came in handy when stories of lost love, abuse, and unrequited love were expressed in poetry and song. Audience members voted and the top three performers were Stephen Fowler with “You Have to Excuse Me,” Katie Brauns with an untitled poem and Tres Eberhard with a song called, “Don’t Need No Man.” A special judges award was given to Brilee Sewall for her spokenword poem. This event was a fundraiser for the “Give Youth A Voice” program, which teaches high school students to tell their own stories through spoken- word poetry. The class, taught by poets Stephen Fowler and Noah Schultz, will take place at the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center on Thursdays, from 4 to 5 p.m., beginning March 3.
