It’s a great economic stimulus for other like developments in the area, and a great stride forward,” the Honorable Wayne Morse said Sunday afternoon in a speech at a private luncheon dedicating J.L. Mann’s Driftwood Shores. Senator Morse’s speech was made prior to the actual groundbreaking ceremony at Heceta Beach, where the $2.5 million condominium is to be located. Oregon’s senior senator, who dedicated Lane County’s first condominium “in the name of trusteeship that all of us owe to the economic development of this great state,” spoke before approximately 100 persons attending the luncheon from throughout the state. He stressed the economic symbol- ism of the occasion, and said that Mann “deserves our thanks” for his contribution to the area’s future growth and economy. … Mann in introducing Senator Morse said that Oregon’s senior senator had done more for Western Lane County than anyone else. Driftwood Shores, on Heceta Beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean, is located five miles northwest of Florence and two miles west from the Coast Highway. Heceta Head, named for Captain Bruno Heceta, commander of the Spanish “T Groundbreaking ceremony for Lane County’s only condo- minium, to date, was held at Heceta Beach Sunday after- noon, at the site of new resort complex, Driftwood Shores. Turning first shovel full of sand is owner-develop- er Jake Mann, of Florence; Max Williams, of Williams and Ehmann, Architects; and Harry Thompson, president of Thompson Construction, Inc., of Portland. corvette “Santiago” who is said to be one of the first civilized men to see the mouth of the Columbia River, is six miles north of Driftwood Shores. Owner-developer of the $2.5 million all-year resort com- plex is J.L. “Jake” Mann, Florence, who is also the owner- operator of the Rhodo-Dunes Golf Course at Florence. Architect for the project is Williams and Ehmann, Architects, A. I. A.; general contractor, Thompson Construction, Inc., Portland; and financing, the Security Bank of Oregon, Portland. Driftwood Shores is a condominium apartment develop- ment, according to Mann, with its apartments purchased by individuals or families who select a Driftwood Shores apart- ment plan in the building and area they desire. According to Mann, rental and management service will also be available for Driftwood Shores owners desiring to rent their apartment units when not in use. Income from such rentals helps offset maintenance and other ownership costs, and may provide tax savings as well, he said. The two and three story apartment units will be arranged to utilize the beach-front view of the 4.6 acre site, and will be constructed principally from wood and stone components. He said some 95 apartments are planned, to date, with two to 12 apartments in each building. Apartments will be approximately 1,200 square feet, plus outside decks, and fea- ture a living room and dining area, fireplace, kitchen, two or three bedrooms and one or two baths. LETTERS A hint for love Just a hint for you fellas out there for next year’s Valentine’s Day: No need to spend a for- tune on a dozen long-stem roses to give to your wife, sweetheart, mother or someone else you truly care for. One single red rose will mean so much more to her when you write this note. Yes, you have to write a note, telling her that even in the most beautiful bouquet or room full of women, she will always stand out and be ever so special to you. Barbara Swinscoe Florence I survived the San Francisco-area earth- quakes in 1989 and personally witnessed the tremendous damage and lives lost due to out- dated construction methods and building codes that had been ignored for too many years. The horrible devastation only took 20 seconds. Oregon is now rated Zone 5 for the potential of disastrous structural failure during an earth- quake, just as California is. The cost to retrofit our aging high school for seismic safety would be staggering. But the New high school is needed Referring to the letter in the Feb. 10 Siuslaw News from Ron Duzy (“New High School”), I seriously doubt that the reason behind the need for a new high school is simply a matter of replacing water heaters and other systems beginning to fail in this 46-year-old structure. L ETTERS TO THE emotional cost of losing our children from col- lapsing walls and the roof during an earthquake has no price tag, just a toe tag. I, for one, am not willing to risk the loss of even one promising young life and don’t want to be even partially responsible for passing up our opportunity to get the funding needed to replace the building with one that meets the lat- est and strictest seismic code requirements. Write to: Editor@TheSiuslawNews.com Wake-up call The political cartoon in the paper on Jan. 2 should be a wake-up call to all those that are thinking about the future. Hillary Clinton will be four more years of more control, more taxes. Aren’t we taxed enough? Why would someone keep blindly voting for the Democrats after a name, when the Democrats just keep raising taxes and giving us more control and less freedom? Gosh, is it no surprise that a new year gives us more taxes? Sure, all those terrorists that the left is bring- ing in need to live and survive also. Perhaps it is of the belief, let’s show them we mean no ill will or harm to them. They want to live as the Romans do, fine, let them come in. But the majority of them want their brand of law to apply to them. If they want to live in the sixth century, then they can go back to the country they came from.
