SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2016 3 B Dunes City Triathlon seeks volunteers Dunes City is making plans to host its 4th Annual Oregon Dunes Triathlon and Duathlon on Saturday, May 7. Organizers are recruiting volunteers to help staff the event. Volunteers provide invalu- able assistance to ensure that the races and venues run smoothly and safely. They also play a vital support role for all of the participating athletes by providing encour- agement and hospitality. Dunes City will award a $250 donation to the organi- zation that provides the most volunteers. Be sure to include your organization’s name when registering to volun- teer. If your group has the most volunteers present on race day, your group will be awarded with a $250 check. Volunteers are needed between about 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. on race day. Anyone who has a few hours to spare and wants to be part of this exciting event, call Dunes City Hall at 541- 997-3338 to register as a vol- unteer. ATHLETE OF THE COURTESY PHOTO Siuslaw’s winter 2015-16 cheerleading squad SHS cheerleaders place sixth at state B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News A fter cheering for both Viking basketball teams late Friday night as Siuslaw took on Brookings-Harbor at home, the Viking cheerleading squad was on the road at 4:30 a.m. Saturday for the long drive to Portland, where the OSAA’s state 4A small schools cheer- leading competition was taking place. Competing against teams from Klamath Union, South Umpqua, North Marion, Baker, Scappoose, Junction City, Sisters and Molalla, cheerleaders were judged in three dif- ferent categories: skills, jumps and routine. A season of practice and perform- ance came down to just 2 1/2 minutes in front of jundges. Siuslaw finished second out of nine schools in the tum- bling and jumps categories, and sixth overall with 138 points. Klamath Union won the top score and state title with 175 points. South Umpqua was second with 161 points. Siuslaw’s 10-member squad, coached by Diane Conlee, includes seniors Meg Donohue and Amilia Perez; junior Habana Ramos; sopho- mores Tallyn Bello, Emilee Christensen, Siarrah Rain, Victoria Rojas and Ariel Rosinbaum; and freshmen McKenzie Colton and Marissa Wells. WEEK Siuslaw Dylan Jennings Siusla w H.S . Wrestling The Viking 220 pounder is currently the fifth highest ranked active wrestler in the state at the 4A level. The team captain has been the anchor for the team and won his weight class in both Far West League Crab Pool tournaments this season. He was also a runner-up at the Bend Invitational and finished fourth at Cottage Grove. Honorable Mention Sierra Potter Honorable mention is given to Viking guard Sierra Potter. She had seven steals in last week’s game against Marshfield, then added one more against Brookings-Harbor, bringing her season total to a team-leading 71. Brookings came back to tie things up at 14-14 with a minute remaining before the half, but Reavis drained a pair of charity shots in the last 32 seconds to keep Siuslaw holding a small 16- 14 lead heading into the break. By the end of the third period, the teams had deadlocked into a 22-22 tie to start the fourth quar- ter. That’s when, much like Marshfield three nights earlier, the Bruins struck, nailing a pair of 3-pointers, then scoring off of a steal, a pair of free throws and a fastbreak opportunity to suddenly move ahead 32-22. Still, she had the team’s second-highest scoring of the night with 6 points, 2 blocked shots and 6 rebounds before leav- ing the floor late in the game.
