Peter DeFazio (OR–District 4) attended the U.S. Coast Guard Surfman Training Graduation on Feb. 5, during which BM1 Ryan Clendenen from Station Coos Bay and BM2 Klaus Eisbrenner from Station Siuslaw River (above with DeFazio) were certified. Only 505 Surfmen, the most seasoned and well-trained boat operators in the Coast Guard, have ever been certified. They are trained to conduct search-and-rescue in breaking surf, the most hazardous weather conditions that the Coast Guard sees. Each Surfman spent 45 hours training in the surf in the National Motor Lifeboat School in order to earn certification from Surfman Training. Now, they must receive practical training with their unit in order to earn full certification. Swain’s pickup continued eastbound and crossed the cen- terline and into the path of a westbound Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) pickup, operated by Dominic Luebbers, 19, from Salem. Swain and his passenger, Timothy Driver, 26, also of Florence, were both taken to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield. Swain is being treated for critical injuries and Driver is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Luebbers was also taken to RiverBend for precautionary reasons. OSP troopers from the Springfield Area Command are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash. Seatbelt usage is undeter- mined.
