The Vikings had seven wrestlers score to help Siuslaw finish 14th among the 32 teams. “Our kids wrestled tremendously,” said Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik, whose team had three top-four placers. “They came and battled for two days, and had some major victories.” Leading Siuslaw was senior 152- pounder Talamoa Tupua, who won six out of seven matches, including over returning state champion Thomas Harvey of Lowell, in a 9-5 decision. Tupua opened with a win by fall against Thomas KcKinney of Hidden Valley in 4:00. He then defeated Hidden Valley’s Braydon Wright (8- 6), but then lost to Austin Tillery of Henley by fall in 5:00. Knocked into consolation, Tupua went on to win his next four matches, two by technical fall over Oakridge and Sheldon. Tupua’s win against Harvey put him into the match for third place, where he landed a major decision over Asa Alexander of Cascade, 14-5. In that matchup, the Lady Sailors came out on top by seven points, 30- 23. The boys team had a narrow loss by just nine points, 44-35. Friday night, when the two teams faced off once again — this time at Mapleton — it was another battle to the final buzzer for both teams. Except this time, neither Sailors team was able to claim victory. In both cases, a late-game rally by the Indians proved to be the difference in an otherwise virtual stalemate. In the boys game, after Mapleton junior post Nick Smith tied the game at 2-2 early in the first quarter, the Indians went on a 12-0 run that left the Sailors trailing 14-2 until Smith scored on a jumper with 4:34 remaining. After a free throw from Mohawk, Smith scored on offensive rebound. Aside from a free throw from sopho- more post Dominic Wells, Smith was the only scorer in an opening period that put Mohawk ahead 22-9. In the second quarter, juniors Hunter Simington and Tyler Packebush came in off the bench and were able to put See Feb. 16 6:08am / 7.6 7:43pm/ 5.5 1:18am / 0.7 S IUSLAW N EWS 148 Maple St. Florence 541-997-3441 MAPLETON 3C Alder Drive One of the most peaceful, secluded lots just minutes from town.
