Viewfinders announce January photo contest winners Viewfinders Club winning January photos by (from left) Betty Romero, Cliff Harvey and Alan Post FLORENCE — The theme for the January meeting of the Siuslaw Viewfinders Camera Club was “Unusual Shapes,” and the submissions included many varieties of style and composition. M ULTIMEDIA COOS BAY — You needn’t be a musi- cian to enjoy “Musical Instruments @ CAM,” a multimedia exhibition at Coos Art Museum that lasts through Feb. 13, 2016. The unique exhibit presents the work of 11 Oregon musical instrument makers. In the Atrium Gallery, curator Gail Elber has brought together harps, guitars, ukuleles, mandolins, pan flutes, violins, Norwegian hardanger fiddles, Irish whistles and Native American flutes and drums by makers from Pistol River to Portland. Seeing these finely crafted instruments Betty Romero took first place with an unusual rendering of a chipmunk that was “liquefied.” Second place went to Cliff Harvey, whose image of the exterior of a modern building was perfectly balanced. Alan Post was third with a very tricky photo of a glass of liquid in mid-spill. This month’s meeting will be the club’s annual banquet, to be held at the Florence Elks Lodge, 1686 12th St., on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m. There will be the usual monthly contest plus the picture of the year contest. Anyone interested in the club is welcome to attend. MUSIC EXHIBITION ON DISPLAY AT MUSEUM up close is just the beginning. Come to the gallery with a smartphone or tablet and your earbuds, and you’ll be able to watch a video about each artist and hear the sound of each instrument. Many of the artists will present an artist’s talk during the exhibition. Would you like to build an instrument for your own enjoyment? Make a “canjo” with Nick Krissie or a rawhide hand drum with Duke and Danielle Summers. Visit www.coosart.org for a schedule of artist’s talks and workshops. The museum offers a wide range of arts activ- ities including exhibitions, art classes and lectures. Hours are 10 am to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Museum admission: $5 general, $2 stu- dents, veterans and seniors, and free to museum members. Coos Art Museum to host annual staff art show through Feb. 6 COOS BAY — The Coos Art Museum invites the public to attend the opening reception for the Coos Art Museum Staff Art Show, an exhibition featuring art works created by the folks who make the art museum happen. The exhibition runs through Feb. 6, 2016. 2 6 • C OAST Meet the artists and see the wide variety of works that they produce. Among the works on display will be examples of: photography, stained glass, painting, mixed media, collage, wood- block printing, ceramics and fiber art.
