Senior Center board member turning 100 Harold Nusbaum is turning 100 years old in February and he would like friends, family and acquaintances to help him celebrate. The party will be Saturday, Feb. 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Florence Senior Center, 1570 Kingwood St. The senior center is familiar territory for Nusbaum. He began working with the center in 1984, soon after he retired from the forest industry and it has kept him busy ever since. “I think that’s what’s kept me alive all these years,” said Nusbaum. He has been on the board of directors for the past 32 years. Nearly half that time he acted as board president. Penney Volunteer of the Year, with Nusbaum donating the $500 prize to the Senior Center. Nusbaum was born Feb. 10, 1916, in Steel, N.D. He started working in the woods, falling timber when he was just 15 years old. Soon after, he lost one of his eyes during an acci- dent cutting wood. But that didn’t stop Nusbaum. He continued work- ing most of his life. He worked in a barrel facto- ry and for Hanes Lumber before moving on to U.S. Plywood, where he spent most of his career. He started as a lumber scaler and retired as manager of the boiler room. For about 15 years, Nusbaum worked at the ply- wood plant during the day and sold insurance at night. During World War II, Nusbaum joined the Army Air Force, where he worked as an airplane mechanic from 1942 to 1944. When the war was over he returned to the timber industry. Nusbaum married Vivian Sheels in July 1937. She passed away in 1991. He married Tacy Girton in March 1992, and she died in 2004. Today he shares his life with his live-in partner, Mary Weber. Although he has no children of his own, Nusbaum has two step-children from his second marriage. He has two grand- children (one who is deceased), along with four great-grand- children and four great-great- grandchildren. Prizes will be offered for first-, second- and third-place as determined by the audience, and a special recognition prize for “most pathetic, saddest loser in love” will be decided by three judges. A 60-minute massage by Katie Brauns, gift certificate to Welch to speak at City Club Keynote speaker and sto- ryteller Bob Welch will speak at Florence City Club on Friday, Feb. 5. A well-known author and former national award-win- ning Register-Guard colum- nist, Welch will be speaking on "The Power of Story in a World That Has OD’s on Information.” His forte is people. The program begins at noon at Ocean Dunes Golf Links, 3345 Munsel Lake Road. Welch is the founder of the Beachside Writers Workshop, whose flagship event is held in Yachats the last weekend of February. Sally Wantz, the hostess for the event, promises to be irrev- erent, sarcastic and funny. Sympathy and hugs will be offered to the heartbroken. Bettie Egerton, chairperson for this event says, “If you are happily in love, it would be best if you didn’t show up. But if your heart has been stomped on and broken into a thousand little pieces, we would love to have you join us in this fun- filled event.
