B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News With the regionals little more than two weeks away, Siuslaw’s wrestling program is fine tuning its engines to make the most of what has been a solid season so far on the mats. Between tomorrow and Saturday, the Vikings will spend three days on the mats, with two of those days wrestling at the multi-divisional Cottage Grove Invitational — one of the largest meets in the state. Last weekend, junior 138-pounder Scott Simmons and senior 160- pounder Talamoa Tupua each brought home individual titles at the 12-team Douglas Invitational. Both wrestlers dominated their way to the champi- onship, with Simmons going 4-0 and Tupua pinning all three of his oppo- nents for the title. Sophomore Ricky Huff, wrestling at 113 pounds, and junior heavy- weight Kainan Lane, wrestling at 285 pounds, each finished second for the Vikings. At 132 pounds, Riley Jennings placed fourth after defeating Kolby Lavin-Williams of Douglas by fall in just 22 seconds. As a team, Siuslaw finished just 4.5 points away from a tie for second See GRAPPLERS 3B NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS Siuslaw nearly nabs North Bend L EAGUE STANDINGS As of 2/1/16 B Y N ED H ICKSON B ASKETBALL FWL G IRLS BROOKINGS MARSHFIELD DOUGLAS N. B END : 37 For the third time is as many weeks, the Vikings were within reach of an upset, this time over the visiting Bulldogs of North Bend as the Vikings rallied to within a single bucket of sending last Friday’s game into overtime. Aside from a scoreless second period, during which North Bend managed just eight points on a pair of 3-pointers and a lay-up, Siuslaw essentially played the Bulldogs point-for-point through the other three periods. In the first period, both teams were at a draw for the first two min- utes, until sophomore post Trent Reavis sank a pair of charity shots. North Bend tied it up at the other end, with senior post Reese Siegel putting the Viks ahead 4-2 after two free throws. Again, the Bulldogs answered, with Reavis draining a long 3-point- er from the corner for a 7-4 lead. MID COAST LAKES The coho salmon fish- eries in Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes are slow to fair. This time of year is typically the most produc- tive. Recent rains and big tide should help to move new fish into the lakes. The West Lake Boat Ramp at Siltcoos has been close for repairs but there is a neighboring private ramp that can be utilized. Look to fish near the lake outlet and by the major tributaries that enter the lakes. Casting or trolling spinners or various plugs can be effective.
