2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 2016 California man dies in Highway 101 accident OBITUARIES COVEY—Lois Marie Covey, 87, formerly of Napa, passed peacefully at her home in Florence while surrounded by family on March 13, 2015. Lois was born in Los Angeles, Calif., to the late Bill and Gladys Leonhart on September 15, 1927. Lois attended Sequoia High School before attending San Jose State University, where she met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Dale Covey. She and Bob were married Aug. 20, 1950, and enjoyed a long and happy life together until Bob’s passing in 2004 after 54 years of marriage. Lois and Bob relocated to Napa, where they settled and raised their two sons, Mike and Steve. While raising their sons, they designed and built their home, then established and operated the Mt. George Christmas Tree Farm. People came for miles just to have the ultimate family experience of finding the perfect Christmas tree, with a cup of hot cocoa and a candy cane for the kids, along with feeding the sheep in the barn. Lois found great joy in her life at the farm. She was an avid gardener and an accom- plished homemaker. Lois was a warm and com- passionate person who espe- cially enjoyed being surround- ed by family and friends. In addition, she had a great love of animals and provided a wonderful home for many dogs and cats, chickens and geese, to name a few. While living in Napa, Lois volunteered at the Napa Humane Society. In 1990, Lois and Bob relo- cated to Florence, where the Siuslaw River feeds into the Pacific Ocean. It was here that Bob designed and built Lois’s beautiful dream home. Lois is survived by her sons, Mike and Steve Covey; her brother, Bill Leonhart; a nephew, Billy Leonhart; and numerous friends. She deeply touched the lives of all who knew her. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. YOUNGBLOOD—Jack H. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers responded to a fatal vehicle crash on Dec. 26 at about 11:45 a.m., at milepost 162 of Highway 101 in Yachats. Preliminary information indicates that Allan Richard Schmidt, 94, from Fortuna, Calif., was operating a white 2006 Chevrolet Colorado pick- up and traveling southbound. For unknown reasons, the truck veered off the roadway and struck a utility pole off the southbound shoulder . The Colorado then crossed over a private driveway and came to rest in thick brush west of the highway. Air bags were deployed and Schmidt was not wearing a safety belt. Troopers pronounced him deceased at the scene. OSP was assisted by Yachats Fire and Rescue, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Lin- coln County District Attorney’s Office, Lincoln County Medical Examiner and Oregon Depart-ment of Transportation.
