SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JANUARY 2, 2016 Library Friends seek used books for upcoming sale Start the new year by mak- ing space on your book- shelves for all of the new and slightly used books you will acquire this year at the Friends of the Library book sales. The Friends are always looking for donations of gen- tly used books which can be brought to the library circula- tion desk at any time. While the Friends welcome all donations and excel at finding good homes for most materials it receives, it’s diffi- cult to successfully sell text- books, encyclopedia sets and outdated periodicals. 3 A B&G Club members make holiday cards However, large-print books audio books, cookbooks, chil- dren's books, how-to books, books about crafts and hob- bies, sports, biographies, cur- rent magazines, and the ever- popular fiction-mystery, sus- pense, horror, science fiction, and western titles are always welcome. Book sales are one of the Library Friends’ primary fundraisers. All proceeds go to support both branches of the Siuslaw Public Library and their programs. EDITOR@THESIUSLAW NEWS.COM Veterans’ information possibly compromised SALEM — The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs (ODVA) recently deter- mined that the personal infor- mation of 967 Oregon veterans may have been compromised. A preliminary and ongoing investigation indicates that copies of DD214s (DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) may have been in the posses- sion of a person unauthorized to handle this information. At this time there is no evi- dence to suggest that there has been any attempt to misuse the information; however, because personal information such as social security number, date of birth, address and full name is typically on discharge docu- ments, ODVA is treating this compromise with critical importance. All impacted veterans have been mailed a notification and offered credit monitoring serv- ices for a full year at no charge. “Beyond the more immedi- ate investigation and response for our veterans that are impacted, I have also asked our leadership team for a broader review of our policies and internal controls around veter- ans' confidentiality and priva- cy,” said ODVA Director Cameron Smith. “The trust our veterans have in our ability to keep their personal information private goes to the core of our work.” ODVA takes great pride in our advocacy on behalf of Oregon veterans and deeply regrets this release of personal information.
