SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2015 FRAA artists to showcase Library work at Siuslaw Library Tidings Starting on Saturday, Jan. 2, two pieces and FRAA will and continuing throughout the month of January, members of the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) will be show- casing some of their finest artistic and photographic works and creations at the Siuslaw Public Library in Florence. Along with the many forms of traditional and contempo- rary works, there will also be many pieces in the glass show- case. Members can bring up to hang them depending on space. Drop off times are between 10 a.m. and noon. There will also be an oppor- tunity for new people to become a FRAA member and include their art the same day. The Girl in the Spider’s Web By David Lagercrantz Review by Susie Voth It is risky business to continue an already established series after the death of an author. Readers have certain expectations for the characters and for the story. David Lagercrantz, a well- respected Swedish author, was selected by the family of Stieg Larsson to continue the best-sell- ing Millennium series featuring Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. Having read the first three books in the Millennium series ... well, sign me up. Blomkvist still owns and works at Millennium although the mag- azine has fallen on hard times. He needs a great story to set the mag- azine back on track. In the middle of the night he receives a call from Frans Balder, a computer scientist on the cutting edge of artificial intelligence research. Balder fears for his life and promises Blomkvist a scoop that will pull Millennium out of its slump if Blomkvist will immedi- ately interview him. Salander, super hacker extraor- dinaire, has infiltrated one of the most highly secure agencies in Washington D. C., the National Security Agency (NSA). Her hacking skills are not as subtle as she thinks and Salander is discov- ered by an NSA agent. He is on her trail, all the way from the United States to Sweden. Amid these dilemmas there is a child, August, the autistic son of Frans Balder. August has seen too much and his life is in danger. Salander and Blomkvist work in tandem to protect him and solve the many mysteries in this fast paced novel. Lagercrantz is not Larsson; however, he takes the Millennium series and within the pages of “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” tells an engaging tale. 1) Visit the library more often. Libraries offer a treasure trove of books for readers and checking out or downloading books costs nothing 2) Read more books. Reading is a great activity any time of the day and, in addition, is relaxing 3) Talk about books with oth- ers. Don’t be shy about sharing your good reads with family and friends 4) Read all types of books. Reading outside your usual habits will open up your reading experi- ence 5) Keep a list of the books you’ve read. You never know when you’ll be asked to name your favorite books of the year. A wide variety of community mem- bers will come together to help plan the library’s future. Submissions due tomorrow for FEC’s Artistic Visions The deadline has been extended to Thursday, Dec. 31, for artists to submit 2-D, photography and 3-D art pieces to the Florence Events Center (FEC) for the Artistic Visions Award Show. The artwork will be on dis- play from Tuesday, Jan. 5, through Monday, Feb. 1. Three out-of-town judges have been selected for this show, each one respected in their field of expertise in 2- D, 3-D and photography art- works. A cash prize of $150 will be awarded for first place in each category, along with honorable mention rib- bons. Each artist may submit up to 3 pieces of art, and all pieces must be for sale. A nonrefundable fee of $20 per work must be sent with the entry form. Reproductions of original artwork (ink-jet prints, etc., with the exception of photog- raphy) are not eligible. All artwork must be hand- delivered to Gallery One at the FEC, 715 Quince St., on Monday, Jan. 4, between 9 a.m. and noon. A reception for artists and the community will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, between 2 and 5 p.m., with awards pre- sented at 2:30 p.m. Applications are available at the FEC or on www.event center.org.
