Grants are awarded to local nonprofit organizations for projects and programs in the areas of education, medi- cine, science, the arts and social and civic services. In February 2015, the grant program distributed over $90,000 in grants to thirty-seven nonprofit recipi- ents covering most of west- ern Lane County. In fact, Portland author Phillip Margolin actually wrote this book because of the photograph. While at a writers’ conference in Georgia, he saw the thought- provoking photograph hanging in a bathroom. He immediately began asking himself questions. Those questions and his answers became “Woman with a Gun.” Stacy Kim was living the good life in New York City — not! In fact, her life was miser- able. All of the potential she felt upon arrival dribbled away at her dead-end job. Until the day she spent her lunch hour at the Museum of Modern Art and discovered the photography of Kathy Moran. Moran’s breakout black and white photo was entitled “Woman with a Gun” and it won a Pulitzer Prize 10 years earlier. Stacy Kim stands in front of the photo and feels ignited. Tregoning will be speaking at the City Club on Friday, Dec. 18, beginning at noon. He will discuss the Florence Coast Guard, which will be highlighted with a power point presentation. As a senior chief, Tregoning currently serves as the Officer In Charge of U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River. The majority of his 18 years of service has been in the Motor Life Boat community serving as a Surfman at Surf Stations along the West Coast. He recently returned to the West Coast after three years in Guam serving as Officer In Charge of Coast Station Station Apra Harbor. Both libraries will be closed Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25. The Florence and Mapleton libraries will both close at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31, and both will be closed on Friday, Jan. 1, New Year’s Day. The library would like to wish all our patrons a wonderful and safe holiday season! Step back in time 10 years to the wedding night of multi-mil- lionaire Raymond Cahill and Megan Crouse. There was no happy ending to that night. Raymond Cahill was beaten and killed during an alleged rob- bery. Megan Cahill left the scene of the crime and walked to the beach with the murder weapon, a Schofield .44 Smith and Wesson revolver. Kathy Moran stumbles upon Megan Cahill on the beach. The photo opportunity was too good to pass up, so she snapped the shot before calling 911. The story effortlessly moves from present to past and back again.
