6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2015 Empty Bowls fill up for the hungry F lorence Food Share’s annual Empty Bowls fundraiser set a new record this year, with nearly 1,000 handmade bowls and a record- setting amount raised. “It’s the best year we’ve had in 20 years,” said Florence Food Share Board Member Bonnie MacDuffee. “It was put on by the effort of a lot of volunteers and local artists. Sponsorships covered all of our expenses, so all the proceeds went to benefit Florence Food Share.” Empty Bowls opened Dec. 3 to a reception catered by the Siuslaw High School catering program and continued until Sunday, Dec. 6. Local clay and wood artists made the bowls, which came with a voucher for a bowl of soup from Mo’s, Nature’s Corner, Craig’s Family BBQ or La Pomodori. Light up businesses, homes for Holiday Light Contest The holiday spirit is alive and well in Historic Old Town Florence. In an effort to bring back a Florence tradition from years past, Central Lincoln PUD and the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce are reviving the Florence Holiday Light Display Contest. Businesses and residents have the opportunity to make Florence even more charming by decorating homes or busi- nesses with holiday lights and entering the Holiday Light Display contest for chances to win up to $250 to shop at local businesses. Entrants can be either com- mercial or residential. Each category will have a first, second and third prize winner. The prizes range from $100 for third place to $250 for the first-place winner. In an effort to promote energy savings, all entry light strings must be LED lights. Non-LED lit decorative char- acters and similar items are acceptable. The contest is open to both the Florence and Dunes City areas and is not restricted to official city limits. The deadline to enter is Tuesday, Dec. 15. Lights will be judged Thursday, Dec. 17, and the winners will be announced Friday and Saturday. Entry forms can be found at www.ci.florence.or.us and can be turned in to the Florence Visitor Center at 290 Highway 101 or emailed to sherri@florencechamber .com. The bonfire will be lit shortly there after. If it is raining, the picnic shelter will provide cover. Again this year, the Yachats Ladies Club will be providing sweet treats and there will be coffee and hot chocolate. Spontaneous drumming and singing always break out, so feel free to bring a percussion instrument — or bring a piece of firewood to add to the bonfire. This is a free celebration event. Any donations will be shared with the nonprofit organizations that are partici- pating.
