State grants available for ‘Share a Pair’ to help
veterans, war memorials those in need at SOS

Oregon Parks and Recreation
Department is offering grants
for the construction or restora-
tion of veterans and war
memorials.
New monuments should
recognize veterans and wars
not already recognized. Grants
for restoration could be used
for broken monuments, miss-

earlier wars.

The Boys and Girls Club
operates multiple after-school
programs, including the Teen
Center, the elementary after-
school program and several
elementary and middle school
sports and cheerleading pro-
grams.
Currently, between 25 and
35 sixth to 12th grade stu-
dents participate in Teen
Center activities. The center is

“With kids, you always
hear about the bad stuff that
goes on, but there is so much
good stuff,” Trent said. “As
you get to know these kids,
they just open their hearts to
you. It is a treasure.”

(SOS) is in need of socks for
all members of the family, so
the Siuslaw High School
Interact Club has launched the
Storm
“The best way to stay safe in
times like this is to have an
emergency response plan,”
Kreitz said.
This includes an emergency
kit of food, water, first-aid sup-
plies, batteries, flashlights, a
radio and other supplies.
He also advised having an
escape route and a designated
meeting place in mind.
“Most of this has to be done
before the storm hits. You
might not be able to call 911.
You might have to provide your
own 911 service,” Kreitz said.
Other than tree hazards,
there was also a threat of flood-
ing along the Siuslaw River and
other coastal creeks.

The recent batch of storms brought high winds and heavy
rain to the area. Trees fell on properties, power lines and
across roads. Western Lane Ambulance District and
Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue responded when this tree
crashed onto a home on Buck Lake Road.

“We are still somewhat
struggling with funding,”
Fraley said. “We’re between
half and three-quarters of the
way funded to provide din-
ners. The community always
steps up.”
Food donations may be
dropped off at Holloway and
Associates CPA or Hoberg’s
Complete Auto Repair.
Monetary and toy donations
may be mailed to Soroptimist
of Florence, P.O. Box 1209,
Florence, OR 97439.
The toys and food baskets
will be given out on Saturday,
Dec. 19.
Soroptimist members and
other volunteers will disperse
food at 10 a.m. at Siuslaw
Middle School, 2525 Oak St.

any family in need in the

that a flood watch and high surf
advisory continues through
today.
A flood watch means there is
a potential for flooding based
on current forecasts.
Landslides and debris flows
are possible during this flood
event. People, structures and
roads located below steep
slopes, in canyons and near the
mouths of canyons may be at
