Florence Police and Siuslaw High School to hold ALICE safety training drill Tuesday The Florence Police Department (FPD) will be at Siuslaw High School on Tuesday, Dec. 8, beginning at 12:30 p.m., to provide ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training to the high school students and staff. Officers will begin with a presentation to the students explaining the ALICE method of responding to active man made threats, including active shooters. After the presenta- tion, students and school per- sonnel will have the opportu- nity to participate in an active threat drill. The Siuslaw School District and the FPD have held informational meetings for parents on the upcoming ALICE training within the schools. Due to the sensitive nature of active threat training, the Siuslaw School District is advising parents and students that they can opt-out of this training prior to Dec. 8 by sending a written note to Siuslaw High School Principal, Kerri Tatum. Students will also have the ability to opt-out of the drill on Dec. 8 after the presenta- tion by the FPD. FPD and other local law enforcement agencies have been working with Siuslaw School District staff on safety training for active threats, including active shooters. Law enforcement have pro- vided school personnel with ALICE training, which is specifically designed to improve their ability to pro- tect students and coordinate with first responders in the event of an emergency. The ALICE system has been employed across the country in the past few years and is now being conducted to schools across Lane County. The purpose of ALICE training is to prepare individuals to handle the threat of an Active Shooter or other man made threats. ALICE teaches individuals to participate in their own sur- vival, while leading others to safety. For more information on the ALICE system, visit www.alicetraining.com.
