Franklin said the school has a list of things that it is doing in order to achieve that atten- dance goal. “Our first objective is for staff and parents to set a goal. Our goal is 95 percent: the green zone,” he said. He said both adult volun- teers who work with all stu- dents, or school seniors men- toring freshmen, are two ways to improve attendance rates. For the first two months of this school year, Franklin said the high school attendance rate is 96 percent. He conceded that it is too early in the year to tell if this number will hold. “We still have far too many red-zone students,” he said. “In the freshman class there are 35 students in the red- zone. There are 37 sopho- mores, 56 juniors and 58 sen- iors in the red-zone. Franklin said that ninth and 10th graders generally have better attendance. “They don’t have cars and they have fuller class sched- ules. Juniors and seniors often have less parental oversight as well,” he added.
