Author Louise Penny insists the books in the series are not cozy mysteries — and I would agree. There may be cozy mystery aspects to “Still Life” but over- all it is a well-paced mystery with interesting characters. Jane Neal, a former teacher in the small town of Three Pines, has been found dead in the woods near her home. She was well respected and had many friends in the community. Why then was she murdered … or was she? The locals won- der if it might have been a hunt- ing accident, as many outsiders in town tote weapons and hang deer off the front bumpers of their sports utility vehicles. It could have been an unfortu- nate accident, right? Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surete du Quebec is sent from Montréal to the small hamlet to solve the mystery. His methods are unusu- al: he relies on collaboration from his team of police officers instead of competition. He encourages sharing of information and discussion but also insists that his team follow instructions as rookie investiga- tor Agent Yvette Nicole learns. Gamache attempts to guide the sometimes arrogant Nicole with his wise council. He tells her there are four sentences to learn to say and mean — “I don’t know. I need help. I’m sorry. I was wrong.” I was left wondering if Nicole as a character will show up in future books. In his methodical, compas- sionate way, Gamache follows one clue to the next, interviews one suspect after another, and there is no shortage of suspects in Three Pines. His trademark query “Tell me what you know” invites investi- gating police officers as well as Jane’s friends and other mem- bers of the community to do just that. 5 A in the Bromley Room. McCarthy will return on Sunday at 1 p.m. to conclude the Day of the Dead program. Dia de los Muertos, while honored through Latin America, is mostly closely associated with Mexico, in which the dead are honored with festivals and live- ly celebrations. The most familiar symbol of Dia de los Muertos may be the calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls), which appear every- where during the holiday: in candied sweets, as parade masks, as dolls. Attendees are encouraged to bring offerings for the altar, which can be retrieved the next day. Holiday closure The library will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in honor of Veterans Day. Regular hours resume the following day, Thursday, Nov. 12. Fun fact: Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day and celebrated the arm- istice at the end of World War I, which took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Have a safe holiday and remember our veterans!
