Along with major financial and volunteer support, the church has agreed to store the equipment for the shelter which has now been moved to the church social hall. Last year, its volunteers ran the food program for the shel- ter, and it was the single largest donor of financial assistance to get the new shelter going. Norma Wood, wife of the church’s new minister, has taken on the biggest volun- teer job, which is coordinator of all of our volunteers. As the new minister at the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw, 3996 Highway 101, the Rev. Greg Wood, said, “That’s what we do. Jesus tells us to love our neighbors, and we see supporting the Emergency Cold Weather Shelter as one way to do that.” The chairman of the com- mittee which has organized the emergency shelter, Bob DuBose, said he wants to put out the word that the shelter needs more volunteers. Compassionate people who can come on short notice to spend one of the night shifts, or help with food, clean up, laundry or simply put out the word when the shelter is opening are needed. DuBose said the shelter will only open when there is fierce wind and rain, and the temperature is below freez- ing. He noted that despite the generally mild winters, every year in the last 10 years at least one homeless person has died of hypothermia in or around Florence. “In helping, getting to know and just talking to these poorest and neediest of our Florence brothers and sisters, you are not giving but receiv- ing,” said DuBose. “Getting into this effort of love will greatly enrich your life.” To volunteer one can go to the shelter’s website at www. coldshelter.org, or call Norma Wood at 804-439- 1775.
