6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2015 Viewfinders announce summer contest winners Entrepreneurs, prepare for RAIN Oct. 28 The City of Florence, Florence Area Chamber of Commerce and Regional Accelerator and Innovation Network (RAIN) are launch- ing a new “Startup Florence Coast” initiative to support startup companies. The first ever free “Call of Interest” event is happening on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at City Lights Cinemas, 1930 Highway 101. Beer, wine and light fare will be served. Listen to presentations about RAIN’s successes: • Hear Willamette Valley startups deliver 5 minute pitches about their high- growth venture. • Hear from seasoned “angel investors” about how and why they invest in Oregon-based startup compa- nies. • Learn how Oregon RAIN is providing free resources to Siuslaw Viewfinders Club summer winners include photos by Jane Pittenger (above), Betty Romero (top right) and Cathy Wilson (bottom right). Siuslaw Viewfinders Club did not hold formal meetings of the camera club over the summer, but the members were busy with three themes to shoot. They were judged at the club’s September meeting. For the theme “Green with Envy,” Jane Pittenger took first place with a photo of a green frog looking enviously at a bug on the head of a blue poisonous dart frog. Second place went to Mary Nulty with a photo of a very green caterpillar, and third was captured by Curt Peters with a late evening photo of Smith Rock. “Waterfalls” was won by Cathy Wasson with a photo of Sweet Creek Falls in autumn. Second place went to Curt Peters with a somewhat surre- al take on a collection of smaller falls on Sweet Creek. Third place went to Rudy Gargioni. The final theme was “Photographs of Other Photographers,” in which Betty Romero took first place with a capture of club mem- ber Steven Jones at the Newport Bridge. Second place went to Jane Pittenger with a photo of a photographer and his helper standing in the middle of Smith River while a blue heron looks on. Third place was won by John Colwell taking a picture of a photographer trying to take a picture of a fawn who was trying to mooch a snack from him and was too close. The club’s next meeting will be held in the Bromley room of Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St., at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5. Library celebrates National Arts, Humanities Month During the month of October, the Siuslaw Public Library joins thousands of arts organizations and communities across the nation in celebration of National Arts and Humanities Month. The Siuslaw Public Library will feature six programs hon- oring the efforts of artists, authors, musicians, historians, teachers, performers and cul- tural groups who make the arts and humanities an impor- tant part of everyone’s life. Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts and national coordinator of Arts and Humanities month, says, “Everyone rec- ognizes the creative and cul- tural value of the arts and humanities. “National Arts and Humanities Month offers us a chance to celebrate the often overlooked economic, educa- tional and civic engagement values that the arts impart in our daily lives.” The month of festivities at the Siuslaw Public Library will kick off beginning the weekend of Friday, Oct. 9, at 11:30 a.m., when the talented musical group Quattrosound will present a special musical outreach event in the main library. The quartet will play its signature seductive blend of Latin, pop, jazz and classical — called “Popzzical.” On the heels of the musical mix will be the second annual demARTS, a demonstration of creativity and art, on Saturday, Oct. 10. The demARTS open house will feature artists and crafters working in a variety of media, from watercolor and painting to textile arts and ceramics. The Last Resort Players will also be present to per- form a special preview of their upcoming production of “Chicago.” Perfect for adults and chil- dren alike, demARTS will provide a unique opportunity Trillium sponsoring free SeeMore vision in Florence Trillium will be sponsor- ing the SeeMore vision van in Florence on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The van will be providing free vision screenings and exams, as well as glasses for Trillium Oregon Health Program (OHP) members who do not have vision services as a covered benefit. OHP covers children through age 20, pregnant adult members (age 21 and older) and adults with specific medical conditions, such as aphakia or kerato- conus, or after cataract sur- gery. The SeeMore van will be at PeaceHealth Family Medical Clinic, 390 Ninth St., in Florence. Trillium members should contact Trillium member services to schedule an appointment by calling 1-877-600-5472. to watch the creative process and to speak with the artists as they work. This year, budding artists and crafters will also have the opportunity to make their own creation and take it home. And, the first one hundred attendees will receive a spe- cial gift. The program will run from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with each group of artists demon- strating their creations for two-hour segments. Partner organizations par- ticipating in the program include the Florence Regional Arts Association (FRAA), the Siuslaw Fiber Arts Guild, the Siuslaw Miniature Club, the Friends of the Siuslaw Public Library, Florence Area Beaders group, BeauxArts — Fine Arts Materials and Kenneth B Gallery. Other events taking place at the library this October include: • Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. — Bob Welch discusses his latest books, “52 Little Lessons from a Christmas Carol” and “My Oregon III.” • Saturday, Oct. 17, to Sunday, Oct. 18, — The Siuslaw Miniature Club dis- plays a miniature world in the Bromley Room during library open hours • Friday, Oct. 23, at noon — City Lights cinema owner Michael Falter leads a discus- sion about “The History and Art of Movie Exhibition” • Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. — Mary McCarty shares inter- esting facts about Dia de los Muertos This month-long celebra- tion is the perfect opportunity to visit the library and explore new facets of the arts and the humanities. Chuck Trent to speak at Friendship Club Thursday Chuck Trent, director of Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County, will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, Oct. 8, luncheon meeting of the Siuslaw Friendship Club, held at the Elks Club beginning at 11 a.m. The Friendship Club meets on the second Thursday of each month, September through June. In addition to luncheons and fund raisers for the benefit of the Florence community, the club sponsors card games: Pinochle on Thursday, and Hand and Foot on the second and fourth Fridays of the month.
