Call to artists for ‘Season of Caring’ FLORENCE — The Florence Events Center and Friends of Florence Gallery Committee are pre- senting a themed exhibit during the months of November and December in Gallery One called “A Season of Caring.” On Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a reception that will benefit the local Food Share and Siuslaw Outreach Services (SOS) organizations. There will be a bin for food dona- tions, and one for donations of warm coats and blankets. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a soup-kitchen style lunch offered to all visitors. FRAA hosts workshop with Break-Beat Poets FLORENCE — October celebrates the spoken word with The Break-Beat Poets special performance and workshop Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Florence Regional Arts Alliance, 120 Maple St. The workshop will be from 4 to 5 p.m., followed by a question and answer session at 5:30 p.m. Four members from the group of 78 nationally known poets will wow Florence with this new wave of poetry. Kevin Coval is the founder of the Break-Beat Poets and has organized sev- eral poet festivals including the largest youth poetry festival, The Chicago Youth Festival. He is the artistic director of Young Chicago Authors. Poet and vocalist, Jamila Woods earned a BA in Africana Studies plus Theater and Performance Studies from Brown University. “The Truth About Dolls” is her first chapter book. Raised in a church choir, she naturally transitioned into a vocalist and songwriter. Woods designs curriculum for Chicago Public Schools and enjoys teaching young people. Tammy Job is Chicago Authors Community and School Liaison and a vol- unteer coordinator for Louder Than a Bomb Volunteer Coordinator. Fatima Asgha is a nationally touring poet, photographer and performer. She created Bosnia and Herzegovina’s spoken word group, REFLEK, while she was on a Fulbright Scholarship studying theater in post-violent contexts. Poetic rhythm has long been appreciat- ed. However this new brand of verse cap- tures the lyrical and rhythmic quality of today’s music. The first 20 students from ages 13 to 17 will receive free tickets. A $5 fee covers the performance and workshop in Hip Hop Poetry. Bring a clipboard, notebook or laptop. Purchase tickets at the FRAA Art Center.
