Draper is a photographer and cinematographer who spent 22 years making movies for Walt Disney Studios and other production companies. He was director and pro- ducer at his own company, Charles Draper Productions, Inc., and many of his films have appeared in theaters as well as on television. “In my photography, I try to disclose not only the things I see, but the spirit of the vision,” said Draper. Hear from local experts, tour local facilities and learn why things are (or are not) recycla- ble. The Waste Management Division hosts this course to help Lane County residents and businesses reduce, reuse, recy- cle and rethink waste habits. Classes will be held Sept. 8 through Nov. 3, on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., at Lane County Waste Management Division in Glenwood. Enrollment is limited. Applicants are accepted on a first come, first served basis. Applicants not able to partici- pate in the fall course will be invited to attend the spring ses- sion that begins April 5, 2016. Applications are available at www.lanecounty.org/master recyclers or by calling 541- 682-2059. Completed applica- tions may be submitted by fax, email or regular mail. The Master Recycler train- ing course includes 35 hours of classroom instruction: nine consecutive Tuesday evening classes, a Saturday compost demonstration and two Saturday multi-site field trips to area solid waste and recy- cling sites. Instructors are local experts in solid waste from business, government and nonprofit sec- tors. The course is free for those who volunteer 30 hours to educate and assist their com- munities in the year following the training. More than 800 Lane County master recyclers have con- tributed 34,000-plus hours of education and assistance to local citizens and businesses since the program began in 2000. New this year is the Master Recycler manual now online at www.lanecounty.org/Departme nts/PW/WMD/Recycle/Pages/ Masterrecyclerrclasses.aspx. Master recyclers will com- plete weekly chapter readings using Recycling 101 from Oregon State University’s online Professional and Continuing Education course. Drum circle stops in Yachats for ‘rhythm and moos’ YACHATS — For the third consecutive year, the Newport Community Drum Circle will head south this month to the annual Yachats River Valley Farm Tour for a special country-style family drum circle at the final farm on the tour. The tour is Sunday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drum circle and live multicultural drumming performance by leader Chandler Davis will top off a self-guided tour of up to seven working farms along the tranquil Yachats River, above Yachats. The well-marked partici- pating farms raise grass-fed beef, bees, herbs, various kinds of local fruit and produce, edible and decora- tive flowers, llamas and peacocks. They offer direct-from-the- farm-at-the-farm honey, veg- gies, beef, fresh goat and cows’ milk, eggs, flowers, cactus, berries and other fruit, baked goods and other items for sale. It’s a working cattle ranch (owned by a classical musician who is also a hand drummer), nestled between national forest and the river, with a pond and a large shady front yard. It’s a laid-back day in the country and everyone is invited to participate in the all-ages drum circle; no musical expe- rience needed, and they’ll even lend you a drum if you don’t have one.
