SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 2015 PeaceHealth schedules disaster drill Aug. 19 PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center in Florence, in coordination with local emergency responders, will be conducting a mock mass-casualty drill on this Wednesday, Aug. 19. The drill is scheduled to start around 8 a.m. at Siuslaw High School and will continue throughout the morning, concluding around 11 a.m. The drill will test the pre- paredness and response of local agencies should a real disaster occur. The event, staged by PeaceHealth, will focus on response plans for an actual disaster that would trigger a sudden influx of patients, media, and concerned com- munity members in addition to the day to day patient activity at the hospital. Rhody Drive paving project begins Aug. 21 Construction crews from Wildish Construction will begin a pavement improve- ment project on Rhodo-den- dron Drive between Ninth and Wildwinds streets on Friday, Aug. 21. Beginning Monday, Aug. 24, crews will be flagging to direct traffic during lane clo- sures. The contractor will be grinding (milling) Rhodo- dendron Drive between Ninth Street and Wildwinds on Monday and Tuesday, fol- lowed by repaving to be com- pleted Wednesday, Aug. 26. The project is expected to be completed by Wednesday, Sept. 2. The reconstruction project, also known as paving improvement, consists of a grind inlay of a 2-inch thick HMAC (Hot Mix Asphalt Cement) roadway surface along Rhododendron Drive from Ninth Street to Wildwinds Street. The project includes 250 square yards of roadway reconstruction to address an area of severe settlement and road base failure. In an effort to reduce the amount of reflective crack- ing, the project also includes the installation of 12,000 square yards of geo-textile paving fabric that will be placed prior to repaving the street. For more information on the project, contact City of Florence Public Works at 541-997-4106. SOS helps with utilities Siuslaw Outreach Services (SOS) recently opened sign- ups for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). SOS will take sign-ups until funds run out. The full scale mass-casual- ty drill is being conducted in collaboration with multiple partner agencies including PeaceHealth, Western Lane Ambulance District, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, Florence Police Department, City of Florence, Citizen Emergency Response Teams (CERT), Life Flight, REACH Air Medical Services and Siuslaw School District, through use of the district’s property. The scenario for the prac- tice event is a simulated explosion in the high school shop. Volunteers will be partici- pating in the exercise to play the roles of patients and fami- ly members. In addition to the planned participants, community members are welcome to view the training as it will provide real-life crowd con- trol training for emergency responders. Onlookers are encouraged to watch but are reminded to be respectful to the fact that it is a training to better prepare the hospital and responders. Organizers caution that the event is a significant exer- cise and the local community can expect to see emergency responders at PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center and Siuslaw High School looking and acting as if it were a true disaster. Emergency staff and drill participants with mock injuries may be seen by motorists and pedestrians in the area.
