SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12, 2015 Adults, here’s your chance to take center stage Have you always been inter- ested in acting and the theatre? Now’s your chance to take cen- ter stage. Melanie Heard will offer an acting class for adults on four consecutive Saturdays: Aug. 29, Sept. 5, 12 and 19, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Florence Playhouse. During this fun and enrich- ing four-week course, students will explore characterization, motivation, diction and stage presence. Students will learn how to deal with stage fright, how to audition like a pro, and uncover individual strengths as an actor, while also discovering how to overcome bad habits and weaknesses. Through the use of games and activities, participants will be exposed to a wide range of theatre terminology and tips, tricks and traps for actors. “If you’re always wanted to give acting a try, now is your chance,” said Heard. “Acting is very liberating and great for building your self-confidence. This class will be a lot of fun for beginning actors, as well as for experienced actors who wish to hone their acting skills and build upon previous knowledge.” The class will be custom tai- lored to each level of partici- pant. “Even if you have no desire to be an actor, this class can still be very helpful,” Heard says. “Many of the skills you FRAA hosts reception for ‘Raw Canvas’ actress Florence Regional Arts Alliance Art Center, 120 Maple St., will host a recep- tion for “Raw Canvas” actress Nancy Hopps tomorrow, Aug. 13, from 4 to 5 p.m. Come meet Hopps and see her perform a small snippet of her play, while enjoying wine and hors d’oeuvres. She co-owns Poison Pen Players, a comedy murder mys- tery company headquartered in Florence, and is the Artistic Director of CROW (Children's Repertory of Oregon Workshops). Originally from Los Angeles, Heard has studied act- ing with the well-known South Coast Repertory Professional Conservatory, has performed in more than 50 plays and musi- cals, holds a BA in Theatre Arts from Cal State Fullerton, and an MA in Education. Twenty 20x20 spaces are available for rent with a dona- tion of $20 to the Lions Club. The Yard Sale will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Coffindaffer resi- dence, 5495 North Fork Road. Vendors can begin setting up at 7 a.m. Money raised by from yard sale will go toward the Lions Club mission of providing eyeglasses and hearing aids for those in need. CYAN MAGENTA YELLOW BLACK 8 B dŚĞ^ŚŽƌĞǁŽŽĚ Hillsbery offers watercolor demo, beginner classes The Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS) marked its 75th anniversary in a Seattle, Wash., convention July 10-12, during which nationally known local watercolorist and teacher Carole Hillsbery’s watercolor “The Country Fiddler” was accepted into the show running throughout the month of August. Hillsbery was awarded a coveted NWWS Signature Award at this convention and her painting was sold. Hillsbery will offer a free watercolor demonstration at her Creekside Gallery and Studio on Monday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon. She will demon- strate while teaching about color, paper, paint and answer any questions you may have. Attendees will not have to paint. Hillsbery paints with vivid colors and a sense of light with an edgy, impressionistic approach. She executes her watercolors on both paper and canvas.
