SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 2015 Spoken Word poetry contest today The next Spoken Word Poetry Contest will take place today at 6 p.m. at the new FRAA Art Center, at 120 Maple St. The goal of this event is to give Spoken Word artists a venue to perform or read their original poems. There is a time limit of three minutes. Entry fee for poets is $10, with all of the proceeds going to the winners — up to $250 for first prize, and if additional funds are avail- able, a second prize will be offered. Public admission is $5. This event is now being sponsored by Florence Regional Arts Alliance, a nonprofit organization. Past winners of this month- ly contest include Noah Schultz with a poem called, “Spring Into Life,” and Eric Sprado, with “Wait ’til You Become a Man.” For more information, visit www.fraaoregon.org or call Bettie Egerton at 503-910- 3625. 9 A Red-letter day at TR Hunter COURTESY PHOTO Last week’s real estate multiple listing meeting was a red-letter day for the offices of TR Hunter Real Estate. The announcement of the award for Realtor of the Year revealed that Desiree Johnson (center), broker at TR Hunter, is the winner. Two other brokers at TR Hunter were honored: Amanda DeTar (left) is now president elect and Amy Johnson (right) is a new Central Oregon Coast Board of Realtors director. Tim Sapp, owner and broker of TR Hunter, congratulated his team on its commitment to the industry and the community. This year also marks the 20th Anniversary of TR Hunter, which will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 11. Military museum plans VJ Day program, Pearl Harbor remembrance on Aug. 15 On Saturday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m., a special presenta- tion will take place at the Oregon Coast Military Museum titled: “Remem- bering Pearl Harbor.” The presenter will be retired Navy CDR James Perry, who lived in Hawaii and witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor. Perry will speak about what living in Hawaii was like before the war; what happened on Dec. 7, 1941; life in Hawaii during the war; VJ Day and what happened after World War II. He will conclude with les- sons learned and a poem by Cornelius Douglas. Perry and his wife, Audrey, have been residents of Florence since 1998. Perry served on active duty from 1955 to 1958 and was a com- manding officer of Navy Reserve Surface units in California and Washington before retiring in 1973. His civilian career involved nuclear power plants, both Navy and civil- ian. He retired as a vice pres- ident of a large electric utili- ty in upper New York State.
