One day, I was reading one of the tabloids, and I threw it aside with disgust. There was no real news on page one, and it had a bunch of hypothetical trades on the back. It was more about what somebody said he would do and a bunch of people react- ing with disdain for the thing that hadn’t happened. “Hey,” I said, pointing to the newspaper, “This is a very bad newspaper.” “No, it’s not,” he replied. “That newspaper is great. You’re missing the point.” I realized that he had just performed some sort of low-level Jedi mind trick on me, but I didn’t care. Now I was free to like that See WEEKLY MID COAST LAKES Fishing for the various warm water fish species is fair to good during the summer months. Among the most popular activities has been sandboarding, which has kept local Sand Master Park busy with equipment rentals and instruction. “We’ve been slammed,” said park owner Lon Beale, who will be hosting the annual X-West Huck Fest “Big Air” competition Aug. 15. The event will include several world champions as well as amateurs competing in different divisions to see who can grab — and hold onto — the most air. E LEVATED 11:19am / 1.1 FIRE RISK : We know that fires frequently occur, and yet no one seems to think they will be the victim of a fire. However, hun- dreds of people are victimized by fire every year in this country. There are some precautions we can all take to reduce the risk of our becoming the victim of a fire. The fol- lowing tips are found in the 2015 Emergency Management calendar, which can be downloaded from the Emergency Management website at www.co.lincoln.or.us/ emergency.man- agement and clicking on “Documents” under the “Resource Center.” Tips for protecting your home from wildfire: • Create a 30-foot non-combustible defensible space around your home. Stack firewood away from the home. 12:34am / 0.5 12:17pm / 1.7 S IUSLAW IUSLAW N EWS 148 Maple St. Florence 541-997-3441 & SHEET METAL, INC. “Your Local Independent Trane Dealer” Florence’s Oldest & Largest Heating Contractor CCB#64 T AKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS “When you leave campsites, drown all embers with water, stir the coals and drown again until it is “dead out.” — Lincoln County Sheriff’s office • Trim branches along driveways so that they are 14 feet off the ground, 14 feet from other surfaces and 10 feet from the roof and power lines. • Use non-combustible roofing materials. Keep gutters free from debris and screen vents under eaves and decks. • Keep yards watered and mowed. Plant low-growing, less-flammable plants near homes. • Post your address in a location that is visible from all directions for at least 150 feet. Campfire safety: • Call before you go — Call your local forestry or fire district to learn if there any current campfire restrictions. • Select the right spot — Maintained campgrounds with established fire pits. If campfires are allowed outside camp- grounds, avoid areas near your tent, structures, vehicles, shrubs and trees and be aware of low-hanging branches See CAMP SHS G RADES 2-4, 1 TO 2 P . M .
