AT THE FEC SIUSLAW RIVER: Cutthroat trout The cutthroat trout fish- ery is slow to fair. Fishing during the early mornings or in the larger tributaries is the most productive. River conditions are very low and warm for this time of year. Bait is not allowed above the head of tide but small spinners, spoons and fly fishing can be very pro- ductive. L egendary names among Siuslaw High School’s ath- letic elite will find their perma- B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News nent place in the school’s history this Friday, when SHS alumni will gather to acknowledge the outstand- ing achievements of a new group being inducted into Siuslaw’s hallowed Hall of Fame. ALSEA RIVER: Cutthroat trout The cutthroat trout fish- ery is fair in the mainstem and in some of the large tributaries. With the low and warm river conditions the best opportunities will be in the early morning when water temperatures are the coolest. Small spin- ners are typically produc- tive as wells as small spoons or fly fishing with nymphs or streamers. SALMON RIVER : Cutthroat trout Cutthroat trout fishing is slow to fair with the early morning being the most productive. Using small lures like spinners, spoons or various flies can be pro- ductive. Seven individuals and three teams will take to the stage at the Florence Events Center to be recognized and celebrated for their contributions to Siuslaw athletics both on and off the field, court or hardwood. With names spanning nearly 40 years of athletic achievement and community service, this year’s hon- orees include individuals who made their mark in everything from golf, track, basketball and football, as well as a spirit of volunteerism that has helped Siuslaw cross country and track programs become one of the best in the state. From the wrestling mats, Ron Bly will be honored for his achievement as John LaDuke (1960) the 1965 state wrestling champion. Ron Bly (1965) Susan Emery Collinge, a three- Rich Prater (1982) sport standout athlete, was well-known by anyone who followed Siuslaw Susan Emery (1987) sports in the late 1980s. Emery was a Sherri Stapleton (1988) fierce competitor in volleyball, basket- Collin Cram (2004) ball and track, where she held the 1988 cheerleading team school record in both hurdles events in 1993 and 1994 boys golf team 1987. During that same period, 1988 grad- Jim Archer uate Sherri Stapleton was a feared force on the hardwood, named the league’s 1988 Player of the Year, as well as First Team All-Tournament and First Team All-State after Siuslaw won the 1988 state title. Stapleton was inducted as part of the 1988 state championship team dur- ing last year’s HOF ceremony. Breaking into the new millennium, 2004 graduate Collin Cram remains the school-record holder in three track and field events: the 110-meter high hurdles, 300-meter intermediate hur- dles and the pole vault — an event he won the state title in as a senior. His performance at the 2004 state meet led to the distinction as the NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS meet’s top individual point scorer. SHS Hall of Fame Class of 2015 Special Olympics starting local bowling team In every corner of the state, Special Olympics Oregon is changing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and this includes Florence. Special Olympics Florence invites all interested athletes to participate in the upcoming bowl- ing season. Practices will be held Tuesdays, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., at Holiday Bowl, beginning Aug. 25. There will be 10 weekly prac- tices and a regional competition in Bend in November. There is no cost to join Special Olympics, nor is there a cost to train or compete. Special Olympics raises funds through sponsorships, private donations and special events. Anyone who has been identified as having an intellectual (or cogni- tive) disability by a medical pro- fessional is eligible to be involved in Special Olympics. Athletes must be at least 8 years old to compete in regional or state games. (Athletes may participate in practices at age 6.) There is no upper age limit. Special Olympics Oregon serves more than 8,000 participants with intellectual disabilities through participation in 14 Olympic-type sports over three sports seasons.
