Most other district lakes were stocked the first week of June. Trout fishing should be fair to good. Due to warm conditions, con- centrate on early morning hours when fish are likely to be the most active. Warm water fishing is fair to good. Coffenbury, Cullaby, Sunset, Lytle, Cape Meares, and Town lakes, and Vernonia Pond all offer opportunity for largemouth bass. Weed growth and water quality may be a problem in some areas. The latest trout stocking schedule. MID COAST LAKES: Fishing for the various warm water fish species is fair to good during the summer months. There are numerous lakes in the Florence area that can provide good opportunity and have boat and bank access. V IKS GET TASTE OF FALL B Y N ED H ICKSON Cutthroat trout The cutthroat trout fish- ery is slow to fair. Fishing during the early mornings or in the larger tributaries is the most productive. River conditions are very low and warm for this time of year. Bait is not allowed above the head of tide but small spinners, spoons and fly fishing can be very pro- ductive. Siuslaw News See M embers of this fall’s Siuslaw football varsity program laced up their cleetes for the first time this summer, donning helmets and shoulder pads for their annual three-day, 7-on-7 scrimmage with Sheldon High School. Hosted by the Vikings, the camp gives both teams a chance to run some plays and get the football gears turning — phys- ically and mentally — before the official start of practice later next month. Also next month, the Vikings will host their 20th annual football camp for grades 2 through 12. For the second year, the camp will be free to attendees, who will also receive a free football and T-shirt. “We’re excited to be able to offer the football experience to youth in our community at no cost,” said Dodson, who will be hosting the camp along with high school coaches and players Aug. 10-13. This year, there will be a beginner’s camp for grades 2 through 4, from 1 to 2 p.m. Grades 5 through 8 will be from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by frosh/soph camp from 6 to 8 p.m. Registration will take place at the camp on the first day. “The Youth Football Camp is something we always look forward to,” said Dodson. New this year is the ability to follow the team with a spe- cial phone app that includes a team schedule and more. The app can be found online in most app stores. CYAN MAGENTA YELLOW BLACK It seemed like a pretty simple idea at first: It’s the All-Star break, and while we’re all naming names, wouldn’t it be fun to pick out a 25-man roster of the all-time greatest baseball names? I know what you’re thinking ... me and my imaginary friends must be great at parties, and while that is so not true anymore, it wouldn’t have made a dif- ference anyway because we never would have made it to any party ... we barely made it out of the Coolidge administration before we realized we had bitten off more of the big leagues than we could chew. A few ground rules: no bathroom humor, no ethnic jokes. If the player had a nickname, he had to be known solely by that nick- name to qualify. For instance, nobody referred to “Babe” Ruth as “George” Ruth. A good qualifier would be the restaurant test. Could the player reserve a table at a restaurant with his moniker? If yes, put him on the team. To make this even more difficult, we eliminated all of the cool baseball names and/or baseball specific names that we weren’t quite sure if they were cool or not ... names like Honus, Ty, Cy, Nap and Tris, plus Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Hack Wilson, Yogi Berra, Duke Snider. I’m gonna throw Rocky Colavito and Joe Pepitone in there for good measure, too. Those are the given few. So, here’s what we came up with. We know we
