River conditions are very low and warm for this time See Jamming on the sand Sand Master Park hosted its 19th annual Sand Master Jam, Dune Riders International’s crown jewel in the Sandboard World Tour series. The Sand Master Jam is well known around the world as the longest-running sand- board event first held on the dunes of Red Rock Canyon, Calif., in 1996. The following year the “Jam” migrated to the much larger Dumont Dunes, just south of Death Valley, where it remained for the next four years. By 2001, Florence was ready to receive the Jam at its new and permanent home in Sand Master Park on Highway 101. This year, the multi-category event offered the skill test- ing slalom race, in which sandboarders race downhill while weaving in and out of turn gates for the quickest time. The competition also included the popular “Drags,” a straight shot to the bottom at maximum speed while clocked by radar gun for the best time. “These were the fastest drag race times we have seen to See SAND 3B July 27 10:15am / 4.8 3:52am / 0.3 9:29pm / 7.0 3:22pm / 2.8 July 28 11:08am / 5.3 4:41am / -0.3 10:19pm / 7.4 4:20pm / 2.6 S S IUSLAW IUSLAW N EWS 148 Maple St. Florence 541-997-3441 FISHING 3B Great Lot Close to Town but Secluded One of the most peaceful, secluded lots just minutes from town on Alder Drive. The boat is a small version of a Maine lobster boat, constructed in a scale of 15-foot-3-inches, and made of wood strips and epoxy glue. The addition of a 15 horsepower Honda motor helped complete the project and make it ready to take to the lake. Petersen’s daughter, Debbie, and a group of friends gathered at Woahink Lake on Saturday, July 11, to wit- ness the launching of his boat. Debbie surprised the boat captain, Fred, with a “Play’n Hooky” T-shirt to mark the occasion. Friends also provided a cake with a picture of the “Play’n Hooky” boat on it. This is Petersen’s second boat, both of which were built with painstaking craftsmanship into beautiful works of functional art. Petersen’s other passion is volunteering at the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum in Old Town Florence, as well as the local Salmon-Trout Enhancement Program (STEP). Petersen, his friends and family said they wanted to thank everyone who supported his project. —Submitted by Donna Dobson
