FRAA offers creative writing workshops FLORENCE — The Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) presents a new pro- gram of monthly workshops for writers of all levels. All classes will take place at the FRAA center located at Munsel Lake Plaza, 4969 Highway 101, just north of Fred Meyer. Two workshops are scheduled this summer: • Saturday, July 25, from 1 to 4 p.m.: “The Art of Memoir — Share Your Story” — Everyone is unique and a storyteller and each person’s life contains invaluable lessons, wisdom, courage and humor. Turn these meaningful experiences into powerful stories that can heal, uplift and inspire hope in others and leave a legacy of love for families and friends. • Saturday, Aug. 22, from 1 to 4 p.m.: “Jump Start Your Book” — Do you have a book idea but don’t know where to begin? This workshop will provide tips and techniques to get started in any genre, whether an ebook or a hardcover, and address publishing options. Writers of all levels are welcome to attend. Bring paper and pen or the writing tool of your choice. Registration is sug- gested but not required. Cost is $20 for FRAA members or $25 for non-members. The instructor offers a free scholarship for someone in need. Classes will be taught by award-win- ning writer, editor and journalist Catherine J. Rourke, who brings 30 years of experience as a staff editor-writer for newspapers, magazines and publishers to the workshops. Educated in English and journalism at the City University of New York, Oxford University and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, Rourke has served as a contractual book editor and jacket cover copywriter for major publishing houses, including Amazon and Random House, in both print and digital formats. The former New Yorker has received more than two dozen industry awards and now resides in Florence, where she is pen- ning a memoir about her experiences as an investigative reporter. NORTH BEND CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY WITH JULY JUBILEE NORTH BEND — This year North Bend will celebrate its 112th Birthday commemorating when incorporation papers were filed to make the city official. The sense of reminiscence characterizes the July Jubilee, set for July 17-19. This year’s theme “Summer Dreams,” reflects the dreams that have built and supported the town. The newest addition to the city is Grant Circle, located on the intersection of Union and California streets in front of City Hall. One of the town’s many celebrations will be the Grant Circle Dedication on Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m. with the unveiling of the Louis J. Simpson statue by his daughter Barbara Simpson Griffin. The July Jubilee weekend is packed with 20 different events happening throughout town, many of which are free and family friendly. Eat with the Princesses, “chalk the walk,” take in live theater, run in the 5K, fish for trout, bowl, swim, enjoy the Parade, “Show ’n’ Shine” and Cruise, have a hotdog or a chicken barbecue, play Disc Golf, eat ice cream, Sip-n-Stoll and, if that is not enough, see “Elvis.” J UL Y 2 0 1 5 • A r ts & E nt e r t a i n m e n t • C OAST C ENTRAL • 1 5
