SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2015 N EWLY ELECTED FRIENDS 7 A Three Rivers Casino Resort announces chowder competition June 5 event coincides with barbecue cook-off ‘Fire It Up’ COURTESY PHOTO Siuslaw Friendship Club recently installed several new officers (from left): Ann Horn; Dee Darrow, treasurer; Jeanette Bratcher, secretary; Joan Randle, presi- dent; and Judy Sause. With pride and prizes on the line, the first Oregon Coast Chowder Competition of the summer is set for Friday, June 5, at Three Rivers Casino Resort’s Event Center in Florence. Clam chowder is serious business on the Oregon coast, with many restaurants claiming to have the “best” in the Northwest. The Oregon Coast Chowder Competition is a way for local businesses to prove their seafood medley is worthy enough to be awarded the “best.” There will be a $500 cash prize for the winning business. “This is one of the best com- petitions anywhere,” said Gary Gortz, director of food and beverage operations at Three Rivers. “It’s why restaurants like to compete here and why we’re expanding that portion of the competition to allow for more restaurants.” The chowder competition is the kickoff event to “Fire It Up!” weekend, a barbecue-fla- vored food lover’s festival. In addition to chowder, there will be “cook offs” for a variety of barbecue offerings on Saturday’s special pulled-pork cook off from 3 to 7 p.m., and Sunday’s barbecue varietal from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both Saturday and Sunday events will feature complimen- tary beer tasting, food sampling and a chance to vote for your favorites. “Locals and visitors both love this event because they are the judges, “ said Erin Reinke, entertainer and events manager at Three Rivers. “I also want to remind all businesses that serve claim chowder are eligible to compete in Friday’s chowder competition.” There is no admission fee for the event and all ages are wel- come to attend. For chowder competition applications, call 541-999- 9997 or email Erin Reinke at ereinke@threeriverscasino .com. For more specifics about overall resort offerings, visit www.ThreeRiversCasino .com.
