Meet G INGER Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay St., welcomes two new artists: noted oil artist Claudia Ignatieff and clay artist Bonnie Wilson. Ignatieff is a retired early childhood administrator. For the past nine years she has become a valued member of the Florence art community as a fine artist and also as co- chairwoman of the Florence Event Center Gallery Com- mittee, publicity chairwoman and board member of Florence Regional Arts Alliance and now a member of Backstreet Gallery. Ignatieff said she is inspired by, “the ocean and its gifts, wildlife and its devotion to its young, the innocent nature… and the love of pets.” She executes her realistic renderings in water-based oils and embellishes them not only with brush but also palette knives to create the fur of ani- mals, the bark on trees and other textures to evoke emo- tion in the viewer. Her works may come from photographs or remembrances that have special meaning for her. They will touch your heart as well. Ignatieff has exhibited at the FEC, Siuslaw Library, Silver Lining Gallery, PeaceHealth Peace Harbor hospital, FRAA Art Center, Oregon Pacific www.shoppelocal.biz COURTESY PHOTO Claudia Ignatieff and Bonnie Wilson Bank, and was featured for two months at the Newport Visual Art Center. Wilson came to Florence from Montana three years ago. Since then she has developed her own style of hand-built pottery, distinctive whimsical homes that invite fantastical myths to reside in their very own fairy houses. These residences have indi- vidual fairy names such as Nissa, Alston, and Elitri and are unique creations unlike any other. She began by making one of her fairy houses for her fairy garden. Each one is made from 3/8” slabs of clay, cut textured and formed into a one-of-a- kind creation. They take several weeks to design, bisque fire, glaze and finish in the kiln. When com- pleted they are perfect for out- side in the garden, or inside your home. Wilson earned her degree in hospitality management, which she promptly put to work in her job with Oregon Parks and Recreation at Cape Blanco. She has also worked part time as a bed and breakfast sitter. See these distinctive works at Backstreet Gallery, open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eugene Symphony presents concert SEAcoast Entertainment Association’s sensational sea- son of seven high-caliber per- formances wraps up on Friday, May 15, at 7 p.m., when the Eugene Symphony returns to present a special Florence-only “Orchestra Showcase.” This unique, one-time con- cert will include the music of Barber, Haydn, and Strauss; and feature the Symphony’s principal cellist Anne Ridlington. COCBR offers scholarships to seniors The Central Oregon Coast Board of Realtors (COCBR) will again be offering a number of scholarships to local resi- dents pursuing their education- al dreams. COCBR has been offering scholarships to stu- dents in Florence and the sur- rounding area for more than 20 years. The scholarship program is one of the many ways that local realtors, as business pro- fessionals, become involved with addressing their commu- nity’s needs by supporting pro- grams in Florence. This year, COCBR is increasing each scholarship to $1,000 and offering an addi- tional scholarship. Two of the $1,000 scholar- ships offered are for high school seniors from the Florence and Mapleton area graduating from an accredited high school (including online high schools), or who have earned their GED or equivalent and are wishing to pursue either an academic or vocation- al career at an accredited col- lege, university or vocational institution. An additional $1,000 schol- arship has been added this year and is open to anyone in the community wishing to pursue (or who is currently pursuing) education at Lane Community College. Applicants should complete the COCBR scholarship appli- cation and provide information on financial need. Application information is available at the COCBR website (www.cocbr. net) under the “resources,” “scholarship” tabs. The appli- cation may be completed online using the online submis- sion tool, or the application can be downloaded, printed, filled out and either mailed to the COCBR office at P.O. Box 414, in Florence, or dropped by the office located at 1234 Rhododendron Drive. The Scholarship Committee has extended the 2015 deadline to May 15, and recipients will be contacted by June 1. Contact the Central Oregon COCBR office with any schol- arship questions by calling 541-902-2560. Also, by way of special reminder, the Central Oregon Coast Board of Realtors would like to empha- size that this scholarship pro- gram is open to everyone, and encourage anyone to apply, even those who may be uncer- tain about meeting the qualifi- cations.
