SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 2015 OBITUARY BURNETT—Udora M. Burnett, 80, of Deadwood, passed away April 14, from compli- cations of a massive stroke. She was born July 16, 1934 in Udora Burnett Placerville, Calif., to Wayne and Elizabeth Tolson. In the 1940s, the family moved to the Deadwood area, where she attended Mapleton schools and was in the 1953 class, but did not graduate. She later received her GED from Lane Community College and was awarded a certificate in Medical Terminology. In 1951, she married Ray Burnett and they were married for more than 57 years until his passing in 2008. They lived in Cheshire, Swisshome, and at Indian Creek on the Burnett Ranch before moving back to Deadwood, where her parents gave her some land to build a home on. Udora raised five children and she still worked to help make ends meet. She drove a school bus to the strawberry and bean fields; washed dishes at a Florence restaurant where she earned the nickname “Pearl Diver”; and was a line cook at the Gingerbread House restaurant in Mapleton; and pulled green chain for Eagle Veneer until the business closed down. Udora was also a volunteer for the Swisshome Deadwood Fire Dept. and, after retirement, worked for the Lane County Solid Waste Dept. as a fee col- lector in Mapleton. She is survived by her chil- dren: Barbara Beers of Indian Creek, Rose Meade of Florence, Donald and Debbie of Washington, Robert and Wally of Deadwood, Scott and Kelly of Florence, and her adopted son, Mark, who spoiled her rotten; 12 grand- children: Rayleen, Aimee, Nathaniel, James, Stephanie, Heather, Christina, Crystal, Joshua, Elizabeth, Jonathon and Carrie; 21 great-grandchil- dren; her sister, Roberta Wrinkle; her sister-in-law, Lillian Peterson; three nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, and a nephew, David. A funeral service will be held today, April 18, at noon, at Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home with interment at the Deadwood Cemetery. Veneta accepts Dunes City Triathlon Challenge DUNES CITY — With 21 days before the Oregon Dunes Triathlon/ Duathlon, Dunes City Mayor Rebecca Ruede visited Veneta to issue a challenge to its mayor, Sandra Larson. Oregon Dunes DAR reaches 7 years The Oregon Dunes Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate its seventh birthday with a luncheon at Spice Restaur- ant on Friday, April 24. Chartered in 2008 with 12 organizing members, the chapter now has 30 members who proved their lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution. Oregon Dunes Chapter represents just a fraction of the 177,000-member organi- zation that is celebrating 125 years since it was founded in 1890. Next month, the chapter will award a third $500 schol- arship to a member of the graduating class of Siuslaw High School who has turned his or her educational life around or overcome an obsta- cle to succeed. The chapter will soon publish a cookbook titled, “DAR, Delicious Ancestral Recipes.” The book includes recipes from member’s families as well as historical informa- tion from Revolutionary times. To pre-order the $15 cook- book, call Mary Gill at 541- 902-8488. Proceeds help the chapter with local endeavors and award their scholarship. In Florence, the Oregon Dunes chapter creates an annual display for Constit- ution Week in September, participates in the Memorial Day Wreath Ceremony, Flag Retirement Cere- mony and Veteran’s Day Parade. Members distribute Christ- mas cards to residents at assisted living facilities and nursing homes in Florence and collect “Labels for Education” for DAR support- ed schools, including Chemawa Indian School in Salem. They also have sent “Love Boxes” to deployed military troops, collected and donated items to Roseburg Veterans hospital and presented several Community Service Awards. Chapter meetings are held September through May, where members enjoy social time with each other and hear interesting speakers. DAR is a non-profit, non- political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, pre- serving American history and securing America’s future through better education for children. She must pay $375 in fines and not contact or be in or about the premises or place of employment of the victim. Kristen Mishell Hubbard pleaded guilty to criminal mischief. She was sentenced to 30 hours of community service. She must pay $660 in fines and not contact or be in or about the residence or place of employment of the victim. Savelieff was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful pos- session of methamphetamine, unlawful possession for bur- glary tools, theft and burgla- ry. According to Lt. John Pitcher, an officer was do- ing a routine patrol in the area, known for vacant vaca- tion homes. “His actions were suspi- cious, so we made contact,” Pitcher said.
