Bandon student wins Best of Show at Vision 2015 Coos Art Museum’s annual competition features artwork from high school students in southern Oregon COOS BAY — Dayle Bivens, a Bandon High School junior, took home the “Best of Show” award at Vision 2015, an annual high school art com- petition underwritten by the Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation. Bivens’ submission, “Feminism by Definition Is…,” a watercolor and ink, won her a two-year tuition waiver to attend Southwestern along with a $250 cash-purchase award. Courtney Bay, a junior from Brookings Harbor High School, was awarded First Place for an “Untitled” acrylic painting. Bay received a two-year tuition waiver to attend Southwestern along with a $100 cash-pur- chase award. Billie Ray Ward, a junior from Bandon High School, took home the Second Place award for her ink drawing titled “Continuation of Imagination.” Ward received a $75 cash-purchase award along with a two-year tuition waiver to attend Southwestern. Seventeen other cash prizes ranging from $50 to $20 were awarded to Illinois Valley (in Cave Junction), Marshfield (in Coos Bay), Myrtle Point, North Bend, Oakland, Pacific (in Port Orford), and Reedsport Community Charter School. Each year, the Vision exhibi- tion continues to present the talents of our regional high school art students. Vision 2015 is on display in the upstairs galleries at Coos Art Museum through April 18. Coos Art Museum has been a cultural focal point of Oregon’s scenic Southern Coast since 1966. It occupies an historic 1936 Art Deco U.S. Federal Building in downtown Coos Bay. The museum offers a wide range of arts activities includ- ing exhibitions, art classes, tours and lectures. Learn creative writing, paper craft and more at new classes REEDSPORT — A variety of classes are being offered in Reedsport this spring. Call to register right away to join the con- tinuing weekly classes or to sign up for the upcoming classes. Creative writing Instructor and English teacher Alexis Parrick will guide students through the creative writing process by issuing vari- ous challenges to encourage students to produce a short story each week. Assistance with technical writing skills, as well as good storytelling, will be shared. Classes are being held every Monday through April 27, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Reedsport Public Library, 395 Winchester Ave. There is a one-time registration fee of $5 and $10 per class. Paper craft Play with paper and misceleneous craft supplies once a week in these fun and cre- ative classes. Instructor Alexis Parrick will offer a different project each week. Examples include origami and masks. The class will be suitable for children 10 and older, as well as adults, and all skill levels. This would be an especially good class for families. Children younger than 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Bring your own supplies or purchase a kit from Parrick. Classes are being held every Friday, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Reedsport Public Library, 395 Winchester Ave. There is a one-time $5 registration fee, plus $5 per class. Music appreciation through dance Grow in your appreciation of music by exploring different kinds (genre) and interpreting them through movement. Barbara Massey-Nino, a professionally trained musician, will lead a series of seven classes that include background information and class discussion of the music, as well as, low impact dance movements. Learn about a wonderful subject, listen to some beautiful music, and get a little physical exercise too. Genres include Folk, Country, Jazz, Rock, Classical, World, and other. Classes will be held at the Presbyterian Church, 2360 Longwood Drive, and run through April 29, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wear comfortable clothing. Cost is $5 per class. Suitable for all ages 14 and up. Chain saw carving Local chain saw competitor Ellie Kelland will share the basics of log carv- ing for those beginners interested in the process. Safe work habits, equipment use, required tools, basic rough shaping and finishing techniques are examples sub- jects covered by the class. Students will work on their choice of bear, cannon, or mushroom. Meet at 542 Fir, next to the Orca Gallery, on Saturday, April 11, at 10 a.m., weather permitting. Wear sturdy shoes, and long pants and a long sleeved shirt. Bring safety glasses if you have them.
