Applicants can obtain applications any of these ways: online at www.soroptimist.org or www.liveyourdream.org, contact your school, contact Liz Burletson at 541-961- 6308 or contact any Soroptimist member. Awards or scholarships are for technical school, community college or university, or continuing a woman’s education. WLCF S CHOLARSHIPS A new Roger and Sherrie McCorkle $500 scholarship has been added to the extensive list of 18 Western Lane Community Foundation scholarships for a total of $31,000 that will be awarded this spring. The foundation administers the scholar- ship program available to both Mapleton and Siuslaw high schools and the applications are available at each school’s counseling office. Scholarships are available for tradi- tional four-year colleges, community col- leges and approved trade schools. All Siuslaw and Mapleton seniors are reminded that the deadline for submitting applications is April 15. Completed and signed applications must be received at the Florence WLCF office at 1525 12th St., Suite 18, or at the mailing address, P.O. Box 1589, Florence, OR 97439, by close of busi- ness on the 15th. A list of scholarships may be viewed at the WLCF website www.wlcfonline.com. G ARDEN C LUB S CHOLARSHIPS Florence Garden Club invites Siuslaw and Mapleton high school seniors to apply for the 2014-2015 Garden Club scholarship. Applicants must be planning a post-high school career in horticulture or a related field, such as forestry or environmental sci- ence. Awards are typically $1,000 or more. Applications are available through high school counseling departments. Deadline for applying is April 1. Since the first scholarship was awarded in 1994, more than $47,000 has been distrib- uted to local students. The Garden Club rais- es funds throughout the year from donations, raffles and the spring community plant sale. Florence and Mapleton area merchants have contributed merchandise and services for raffles as well as monetary donations to the club for scholarship fundraising. B OOK F AIR D INER n Wednesday, March 4, Florence Community PTA hosted the sixth annu- al Book Fair Diner to coincide with Siuslaw Elementary School’s Scholastic Book Fair. About 320 free hot dog dinners were served to families prior to their shopping for books and gifts. The evening gives families a chance to get out, enjoy a meal together and share excitement about books and reading. According to the PTA, the Book Fair earned O Sluggo NETS $4K IN SALES FOR $4,100 in book sales that evening, contributing to the total of nearly $10,500 in sales for the week. The SES library and classrooms earn 50 to 60 percent of the proceeds toward the pur- chase of new books; $2,000 worth of books has already been distributed to teachers for their classrooms. C OMMUNITY A LLIANCE S CHOLARSHIPS Community Alliance of Lane County has announced the availability of six scholar- ships for Lane County high school seniors graduating in 2015. New this year is a $1,000 scholarship for one LGBTQ student who is planning post- high-school training or education. Other scholarships include five Peace Scholarships of $500 each for Lane County seniors who are planning post-high-school training or education as an alternative to enlisting in the military. Detailed information about these six scholarships is available in all Lane County high school career centers and on CALC’s website www.calclane.org/scholarships. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 30, and sent to CALC, 458 Blair Blvd., Eugene, OR 97402.
