SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 2015 Florence seeks to fill committee vacancies Applications for Planning Commission, FURA and EMAC due April 24 B Y C HANTELLE M EYER Siuslaw News The City of Florence is seeking six volunteers to serve in three committees beginning May 1. The dead- line to apply is April 24. According to a city press release, these positions offer citizens an opportunity to vol- unteer their services on sig- nificant matters. Florence Urban Renewal Agency (FURA) Budget Co- mmittee has three open posi- tions. FURA works with the Florence Downtown Preser- vation and Renewal Plan to propose and implement proj- ects for construction and repair of public infrastructure, facilitate public and private partnerships to revitalize and preserve downtown proper- ties, promote development and rehabilitate the waterfront for public and commercial uses. FURA meets next on April 22. Planning Commission has expanded to seven members, so now it has two open positions. The commission reviews and makes recom- mendations on subdivis- ion and zoning ordinances as well as other planning rules and regulations. Its meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. Planning Commission meets next on April 14. Environmental Manage- ment Advisory Committee (EMAC) has one open posi- tion. EMAC serves to inform the public and the city council on issues concerning solid waste management, fees and service provider licens- ing. EMAC also strives to improve public knowledge on conserving energy and mate- rial resources, promoting resource recovery and pro- tecting the health of the envi- ronment through public dis- posal events and programs. The committee meets on the third Thursday every month. Its next meeting is on April 16. For more information on FURA, the Planning Com- mission and EMAC, or to download an application, go to the city’s website www.ci.florence.or.us. Applications also are available at City Hall, 250 Highway 101, during busi- ness hours. For details regarding the duties and responsibilities of these bodies, residency requirements of applicants, term lengths or any other questions, contact City Recorder Kelli Weese at 541- 997-3437. Property tax deferrals deadline approaches SALEM — New appli- cants, and those who need to recertify their eligibility for the disabled or senior citizen property tax deferral pro- grams, have until April 15 to file paperwork to have tax payments deferred until November. This applies to participants who received recertification forms by mail in February and new applicants for deferral. “If we don’t get their forms by the deadline, they’ll be responsible for paying their property taxes this year,” said Bronson Rueda, deferral pro- gram manager at the Department of Revenue. The deferral program allows eligible senior citizens and people with disabilities to have the state pay property taxes on their behalf until they move, sell their home or die. A lien is placed on their home and all taxes, interest and fees must be repaid before the lien is removed. Oregon’s deferral programs have approximately 6,300 active participants. Program participants must meet all of the following cri- teria: • Be either at least 62 years old or a disabled citizen receiving or eligible to re- ceive federal Social Security disability benefits. • Own or be in the process of buying the property, have a recorded deed or sales con- tract in their name, or have a revocable trust, and have lived on the property for at least five years. • May not have a life estate interest, which enables a person to reside on the prop- erty, but automatically transfers ownership upon death. • Carry homeowners insur- ance. • Have a household income of less than $43,000. This includes all taxable and non-taxable income for the applicant(s) and spouse(s). • Have a net worth of $500,000 or less, not includ- ing the value of the home in the program or personal prop- erty. • Either have no reverse mortgage, or, if they have a reverse mortgage, they need to have been in the deferral program prior to 2011. Recertification forms need to be returned to the depart- ment. New applications should be sent to the asses- sor’s office for the county in which the property is located. Applications are available at oregon.gov/dor/deferral. Questions about deferrals can be emailed to deferral. unit@oregon.gov. Taxpayers can also call 503-945-8348 for more infor- mation. Visit www.oregon.gov /dor to get tax information, check the status of your refund, or make payments. You can also email ques- tions .dor@oregon.gov or call 503-378-4988 or 800-356- 4222 (toll-free).
