PHOTOS BY CHANTELLE MEYER/SIUSLAW NEWS The four Minions in The Premiums hammed it up with their playful reenactment of several songs made popular by the “Despicable Me” movies. Six bands sponsored by Florence-area businesses entertained audiences Feb. 28 with a variety of classic hits and new favorites during Fraud-Ville at Three Rivers Casino and Resort’s event cen- ter. The fifth annual lip-sync contest, hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County, generated $22,000 for the club, up $5,000 from last year. Coast Insurance sponsored the winning band, The Premiums, who cackled in yel- low beanies as Minions from the “Despicable Me” movies. Oregon Pacific Bank’s OPB-52s tied for first place but ultimately placed second after tallying “buyable” points for their stage-rocking per- formance of “Love Shack.” The Grease Monkeys, spon- sored by Tony’s Garage, won the “Buy a Vote” Award for their ghost-fighting skills in “Ghostbusters.” Performers throughout the night wore big hair, sequins, go-go boots, overalls, robes, grass skirts and towels while they wooed the judges with Twinkies, gift baskets, beach balls, confetti and Silly String. The bands were sponsored by Oregon Pacific Bank, Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, Coast Insurance Services, Tony’s Garage, Salon Cheveau and Siuslaw School District. Seabird monitoring presentation at library On Wednesday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library, join U.S. Fish and Wildlife Biologist Amelia O’Connor as she details an extraordinary citizen science project taking place in our own backyard. In 2014, Audubon of Portland and the U.S. Fish and COURTESY PHOTO Birdwatchers scan the cliffs at a scenic overlook along Highway 101 near Cape Perpetua. Wildlife Service came together with 19 volunteers to begin a seabird-monitoring project within the Cape Perpetua Marine Protected Area. In the first year, these 19 vol- unteers — ranging from local naturalists to students — col- lected data that has helped determine the breeding success of three cormorant species in the Cape Perpetua area, includ- ing the rare Brandt’s cor- morant. In the library program, O’Connor will share how this project complements data gath- ered by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to construct a more complete ecosystem baseline for Oregon’s marine protection areas. Participants will also learn the result of this year’s moni- toring program and how breed- ing success rates in Cape Perpetua compare with those at Yaquina Head, where similar monitoring takes place. The March 11 program will be an excellent chance to learn more about volunteering for the 2015 seabird monitoring project. This summer, with the help of volunteers, the group plans to monitor black oystercatchers in addition to six cormorant colonies at Sea Lion Caves andCape Perpetua.
