Patterson, professor of religious and ethi- cal studies at Willamette University in Salem, will be the guest speaker at the 20th Annual Florence Lenten Weekend, Feb. 21 and 22. Patterson will officiate and explore the meaning of Lent and of Holy Week. He special- izes in the study of the histori- cal Jesus, Christian origins and the Gospel of Thomas, an early Christian gospel not found in the New Testament. Local business owner, pub- lisher and award-winning author Ellen Traylor will be the speaker of the day. Traylor will be speaking on the subject of brokenness in women that can be changed into beauty by God. Traylor is well-versed on the subject, having written extensively about women in the Bible who were examples of coming out of the ashes of brokenness into the beauty of restoration. An activity will fol- low lunch, with Traylor closing the afternoon with encourage- ment ending at 2:30 pm. There will be a book table with Traylor’s books for sale related to the day’s topic of “Beauty for Ashes.” The cost for attending is $10, which includes refreshments and lunch. FRAA hosts artists ‘Speakeasy’ twice monthly Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) announces that every second and fourth Friday of the month, from 4 to 6 p.m., it will host a “Speakeasy.” This will be a time to get together to discuss various topics of interest to the art community. There will be refreshments served at the Speakeasys, and admission is free, though donations are accepted.
