As Pearson and Doud left, the voice of Lord could be heard from off stage telling her first story of the evening. This one was about her transition from Haiti to Canada and how she found the world of opera at the Conservatoire de Musique in Quebec City. As her life story wound down, Lord’s musicians, pianist Hugues Cloutier and violinist Antoine Bareil, took their places on stage. Cloutier, Bareil and Lord performed “Les Gens De Mon Pays” by Gilles Vigneault. Despite her obviously beauti- ful voice, several audience members wished they could 1/22/2015 4:49:29 PM A quiet word about your hearing. We’re very good listeners. Brad Smith, Au.D. Next was a story about soup, bullion in French but expressed as jambalaya for this audience. This is how Lord described her performances designed to bring opera to all audiences. She mixes opera, pop, Broadway, movie music and a dash of spice together for an eclectic flavor of entertainment. To that end, “Papa Can You Hear Me” from “Yentl” fol- lowed. This song was made famous by Barbara Streisand. However, Lord’s unique operatic style created joy in hearing her sing this popular tune. Lord displayed another of her many talents with her humorous storytelling. Engaging the audience in stories and creating much laughter, Lord expressed her delightful, laid back and happy personality. Lord stated that without musicians a singer has no sup- port. She could not have found better accompaniment than Cloutier and Bareil. They can play anything in any style and did. Bareil’s gypsy-style violin during “Habanera” from the opera “Carmen” by Georges Bizet was outstanding. The music from “Carmen” is a favorite, very familiar and not easy to play. Cloutier made accompanying Lord sound easy. It is not. He had to be on his fingertips every second. And he had to be in sync with Bareil. Hugues was all of this and more. In spite of a couple of iffy vocal moments and some dis- tracting reading from sheet music, Lord was not afraid to take the risk of presenting familiar selections with great success. Lord’s rendition of “Sempre Libera” from “La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi proved to be completely over the top. It was pure opera and total bliss. The lack of English didn’t matter due to one of Lord’s other talents in her emotional expression of the music. The meaning was clear. Lord was one of SEA’s 2014- 2015 series concerts.
