10 W I N T E R F O L K F E S T I VA L • We d n e s d ay, J a n u a r y 1 4 , 2 0 1 5 Calling pie makers for festival contest Bring your best homemade pie and enter the 13th annual Winter Folk Festival’s amateur pie-baking contest, open to all amateur pie makers both young and old. Categories are apple, berry, other fruit or nut and youth. No cream, custard, meringue or other refrigerated pies will be accepted. First- and second-place prizes will be awarded in each category along with a grand-prize winner. Prizes are donated by Kitchen Klutter, the event’s sponsor. Entry form and fee deadline is Thursday, Jan. 15. Entering pies will be accepted at the Florence Events Center on Saturday morning, Jan. 17, between 9 and 10 a.m. There is an entry fee of $3 per pie with a limit of three entries. Judging will begin at 10 a.m. and win- ners will be announced at l p.m. People’s choice winners return to entertain youth Mike and Carleen McCornack, the people’s choice award winners at the 2014 Winter Folk Festival, return this year by popular demand. They will be featured performers at the festival’s Kids Koncerts at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15. Children from Siuslaw, North Bend, Mapleton and Reedsport schools are invited to attend the concerts, which are not open to the public. Students have already been busy learning the duo’s music and are asked to sing along. Close to 1,000 children attend these concerts each year and enthusiastically enjoy both the music and the learning experience that goes with it. While the concerts are closed to the public, parents of home-schooled children are welcome, but should contact the Florence Events Center for more information. In addition to the Kids Koncerts, the McCornacks will perform in a public concert on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. If you do not want to enter the contest but love to bake pies, the contest will gladly accept donation pies to be sold at the “pie by the slice” fundraiser, which begins at l:30 p.m. They may be dropped off at the events center between 9 and 10 a.m. Saturday.
