Wobbe ends era of food drive After 14 years and more than 80,000 pounds of food hours on Dec. 21. Overflow of drugs, needles forces closure of disposal program On Dec. 10, the City of Florence and the Florence Police Department terminates a more than five-year-old pro- gram to help residents dispose of unused and expired medica- tions at the Justice Center due to abuse from participants. New stricter state regulations and added disposal burdens placed on the police depart- ment also played a role in the program’s closure. Weather disrupts highway traffic Traffic is once again being allowed through the section of Highway 101 just north of Sea Lion Caves at milepost 177 after the road was closed Dec. 20 due to water erosion drop- ping a section of the north- bound lane by more than a foot. The weekend’s heavy rains combined with high tides also caused the Siuslaw River to exceed flood stage and overflow its banks around Mapleton and along Highway 126 at Cushman.
