Morrill introduced a bill to appro- prupriate $30,000 for th . erection of an extension of the Executive Mansion, eoutb of the present structure, of equal and similar interior character, uud to lie connected with the Execu tive Mansion by a corridor. Dolph presented three petitions from the Chamber of Commerce of Astoria—one asking that a life-saving station be established on the south side of the mouth of the Columbia; another asking that $330,000 be appro priated for improvement of the mouth of the Columbia, and the third asking that settlers who laiught land from the Oregon Central Railroad, which was erroneously supposed to be within the limits of the grant, he permitted to p*»*ehese land from the government in preference to land jumpers, wiio have seized it. Mitchell presented two petitions— one from a large number of citizens of Oregon, asking that $300,000 be appro priated for improvement of Yaqulna Bay, and the other also from a number of citizens, asking for the creation of another land district in Oregon. The Senate passed a bill to increase the pensions of widows and dependent relatives from $8 to $12 a month. The bill was passed as it came from the H ouse. The Senate punsed a bill authorizing the Secretary of the Interior to make sale of certain lands of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, in Oregon, to Wm. B. Byers and others. The new electoral count bill was passed without division. Hour introduced a bill to extend the general laud and mining luws of the United States over the Territory of Alaska ; also, a bill to facilitate the settlement and development of that Territory. On motion of Dolph, the Senate passed the bill to grant the Astoria A Winnemucca Railroad Company the right to construct bridges over nav igable water courses. Senate passed ths bill to remove the charge of desortion from the records of the Adjutant General of the Army against soldiers who re-enlisted in the late war without having received dis charge from their first regiments, pro vided the Secretary of War sba.ll be satisfied that re-enlistment was not to secure bounty. HOUBE. LITERARY. —Senators Shermsn. Evarts and Hoar are cousins.—A". K Tribune —Mrs. Brownlow. tbe famous par son's widow, is still living at Knox ville, Tenn. —President Richards, of the Metro politan Horse Railroad of Boston, is quoted as saying, after a study of elec tric motors, that the day of horses is past. —Jubal A. Early is described as a venerable appearing man, his long, white beard reselling to his waist, and his bent figure indieating the rapid ad vance of extreme old age. —M. Pasteur has his theory of hap piness. “True happiness,” he says, “ appears to me in the form of a man of seienee devoting his days and nights to penetrating the secrets of nature and discovering new truths.” _Parson John .Jasper, the famous colored preacher of Richmond, claims that he fwut recently been solicited to go to England on a lecturing tour, and that a man offered him four hundred dollars to deliver his pre at lecture on “The bun Do Move,’’ in a Northern oitv. —It is said that the wife of President Adams eontrihuied largely to the Stats papers of her honorable and distin guished spouse, and that Mrs. Madi son was often useful in moderating the temperament of the addresses which her husband wrote during his term of office.—Chicago Herald. —“ Mr Parnell,” says a writer in the Chicago Tribune, “ is a bachelor, and lives the simplest sort of life—in lodgings, aaa rule taking his dinners at a hotel. His habits are so quiet that he and his sister Anna were guests at the same hotel for weeks without know ing that they were under one roof." —Mrs. Banoroft, the wife of the his torian. is said to be preparing a vol ume of her reminiscences and experi ences, and as she was a belie at Wash ington sixty years ago and has seen the b en t n e o p i e a n d p la n e s at. home and abroad, she can not, fail to favor the jttbiic with an uncommonly interesting look. —An attempt has reeenly been made in Switzerland to adopt a uniform Ger man orthography for that country. The conference was largely attended by printers and booksellers. A proposi tion to adopt the Prussian-Bavarian orthography was opposed by the vote of a large majority, and it was decided to refer the matter to a conference of delegates from all the German states. —John B. Gough re-appeared on the lecture platform at Melrose, Mass., a few evenings ago and introduced him self by explaining the cause of his long silence. “I appear to-night,” he said, for the first time in three months, and for the first time in my life with a w’ of crockery in my mouth. I have dreaded greatly appearing before the public, not under false pretenses, but under false teeth.” Reports spy that Mr. Gough spoke “ with all of his old eloquence anil vigor.” GERMAN-AMERIOANS. W H A T In d n e t r to n e a m t F r u g a l P e o p le W h o R a v e D o n e M n i'h f o r t h e W e s t . WARNER’S S A F E CURE The German settler is not over par ticular about the quality of his land, so long as his title to it is clear. If he can find a good tract of prairie land, at a fair price, he buys it; if not, he goes into tbe woods, “grubs out” a farm, acre by acre, and in the course of years secures a property which compares well with that of his prairie neighbor. It really does not seem to matter much with him whether the soil is good, poor or indifforent. If it is in the slightest degree workable, he will make it nay, and pay well. There is something almost mysterious in his success. It would be called mysterious, were it not so common. But this phenomenon has been witnessed again and again in Wisconsin. Some portions of the State might never have been settled at all, had not the German immigrant found his way to them, and built his humble home, and broken the unpromising soil. But there he is, prosperous ana oontented, and his chllnron are grow ing up around him. In some places he has caused the desert to blossom as the rose, and he does not seora to be grudge tbe years of bard tod that ba Has spent In this effort. He is not afraid of work. His fathers always worked hard. Why should not he? The German is not given to launch ing out for himself, alone afid single- handed, in new and untried enterprises. He is conservative in disposition. Furthermore, hiB social instincts are stronger than those qf the Amerioan, and he will not Isolate himself. Even if by living far apart from his countrymen he could ow j richer land and more of it, he would gen erally prefer to remain In the com munity which he and his neighbors have formed, enjoying its advantages and sharing its mishaps. With him society means a great deal. Had he not been assured of the society of his oompatri fs in the New World, no vis ions of broad acres would ever have tempted him to leave the fatherland. He builds up communities here which are as distinctively Teutonic as any villages of Saxony dr Wurtemberg. Thera are certain streets in Milwaukee, the German-American metropolis, on which one may easily imagine himsolf in the Prussian oapital. There are towns In the interior of Wisconsin in which the predominating spoken lan guage In the stores and shops is Ger man. Because of this tenaenoy to gather in communities, some people say that the German is clannish- And yet this accusation is hardly just. We do not make enough allowance for differences of temporament and tastes between him ana us. He does not adapt himself easily to his surround» ings. Amalgamation is a difficult problem with him, but in his slow, de liberate way he is working out a solu tion. Despite his tenacious social no tions—and oan we deny that they do him honor ?—he is gradually letting down the bars of nationality, ana adapting himself to the conditions which he finds ip the land of his adop tion. Take hipa as he in W" day, on his Wiscon in farto, and nb one need de spair of bis future. He has tbe making of the substantial American citizen, and we can not doubt that time will complete the product satisfactorily.— Birch Arnold, in Chicago Current. CURBS AND D B.
