'But us Jetriuistliu .bucking of the bulk of the party, and the solid Houth isn't disposed to let him be personally sacrificed any longer, it seems likely that lie will hold a place on the quarter deck if be doesn't assume chief commund. He is going p enliven the next campaign a good deal. KveN his democratic admirers, and fol lowers, must admit that N. h. Mutler, candidate for congress, is a dead failure, : so fur us any qualifications for the high office to which he bus gall enough to us pire are concerned, lie may be a very good man and neighbor in the private walks of life, but be is not fit material for a congressman, to represent the great state of Oregon. His most brilliant acts in Congress, in the impossible event of his election, would be the drawing of his salary. The democrats were going to pay off tuo national tu-ii, uecreaue luxation una stop the locking up of three to four hun drer. millions in the treasury when they got into power. They rang the changes on this projiosition from every stump. They have been in now some fourteen months, and the balance of useless sur plus in the treasury amounts to within a Jew dollars of .jOO,000,0OO. They have pretty nearlv ceased all the pretense of w anting to decrease the amount of inter est tiearing debt outstanding. But they are terribly anxious to take up the three hundred millions of non-interest debt in the H'-'ij of our greenback currency. That i. le sort of war they tire waging on the "bloated bondholders," you see. WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY. News Notes Concerning' the Teachers, Strident, ami Friends of this Institution of Learning. The hist semi-term of the year begins to-morrow. Hev. A. C. 1-eabo conducted chanel ex ercises on Tuesday last. Prof. Van Scoy has gone to Sheridan, to hold quarterly conferunee. Miss May Buell and Harold Olierghave gone to Sheridan to sjK-nd tho Kalrhath. The students, so far as heard from, passed a creditable examination on Fri day. Miss Italia Stout is enjoying a visit from her mother, at tho Woman's col lego. W. S. Aldersnn, who is teaching school Rt Crawfordsville in Linn county, is down on a visit. On account of the preparations lielng made for the joint meeting at the end -of the term, the literary societies did not give their regular open-meeting on Fri day evening last. There is some talk of selling the land on which the Woman's collego buildings are located, and moving the buildings onto the university campus. This will probably not be done, unless a price is paid sufficient to justify the removal. The programmes for the forty-second anniversary exercises of the university are printed, and will be mailed to the Rlumni and friends of the school (it once. Tho O. &. C. K. II. Co. has kindly agreed to allow visitors to these exercises a re turn on one-fifth fare. The following-named jiersons have lieen chosen to particulate in the elocu tionary prize contest on Tuesday after noon of commencement week : Misses May Iioise, Uma Irwin, Lillie Litchfield, Saliie Newton, and Messrs. Hodson and Hugh McNary. A CAKll. 1 regret to learn of an effort, by certain parties, to drag the scheme for a bridge acros the river at this place, into politics, by circulating the statement that the republican candidates for county judge atid commissioners are pledged to build the bridge with the county funds. To set at rest this statement, so entirely without foundation, and if possible to keep a purely business enterprise, of so great interest to our city, from being blighted, if not killed, by designing politi cians, 1 winli to slate, that as a member and secretary of the citizens' executive committee having immediate charge of the furtherance of the bridge project, I have taken an active jierHonat interest in all the work of the committee, and have full knowledge of all that has been done with reference to building the bridge. 1 further state that there bus never, to my knowledge, been any effort made to get the eountv to build the bridge or to secure a pledge or promise to that effect from any otlicer of the county or from any candidate, and that, to rav knowledge, no such pledge or promise has ever been made or given by any ollicer or candidate. The bridge will be built under and bv act of the legislative assembly approved Oct. 21 , 187t), and found on page 07 of the laws of that session, and which authorizes the eitv of Salem, (not the county ot Ma rion,) to build Buch a bridge, and for that purpose to incur an indebtedness of fifty thousand dollars, if necessary, above the limit of indebtedness lixed by the citv charter. There is no other practical way of building the bridge, and every step in the work is taken witii relerence to tuat law. It will therefore, be plain to any candid, fair minded man, that it is a ques tion that has nothing whatever to do with county politics, and should not he allowed to enter into the canvass. It is purely a question tor the city i t is a project iostereu and enccuratrei l hv business men, irrespective of party, as a public enterprise, and it a pitv if its progress is to be retarded 6r arrested bv a few political demagogue!, (jrEOKOE 11.
