FORCE or THE DEPARTMENT.
The Department consists of two h.mrl
engines and hooks, ladders and trucks. 9fi
members of tbe engine companies, and 40
members of the hook A ladder company,
making a total of 138 men. The Depart
ment is divided into two band engines and
one hook A ladder truck, all of which are
doing duty.
BOSK.
Tbcre 1 now in the Department S00 feet of
hose, of which there is not more than 750
feet in good condition, and I earnestly re
quest your honorable body to take immedi
ate action in this case and furnUb Ibis De
partment with not less than six hundred
feet of leather hose.
COXDITIOf OP APPARATUS.
All the apparatus in the Department is in
good condition, with the exception of fifty
feet of hose, and No. 2's bosecart. I would
earnestly recommend that immediate action
be taken to purchase a good and sufficient
bose cart fur said company.

Houses of the Department are in good
condition, excepting that of No. 2, which
has no hose tower. X would recommend
thathne be erected without d lay as it is
very much needed.

effort in tbe past year, and I teel proud to

tee on fire and water, for their earnest and
active efforts to promote the interest and
efficiency of the Department.

Dublin, Augwt 6. In spite of the pro
hibitfoh by the authoiities, he friends of
amnesty attempted to bold a meeting this
afternoon in Pbusnix Park. Mr. Sinythe,
member of Po-, lament, Mr. Sullivan, editor
of the Aarion, and John Sullivan Byrne, of
the Iri'hmaa, catered the park wiib a lare
crowd of police. Superintendent Howe or
dered Smytbe and his followers to desist,
when he was barborous!y maltreated. A
fearful riot ensued. Tbe police charged
upon the mob and heat and kicked men,
women and children indiscriminately. The
flight lasted half an hour, whun tho police
were reinforced and succeeded in dispersing
the rioters. Smythe, Sullivan and Xolan
were bndly wounded. Ovor one hundred of
the injured have been taken to ibe hospital.
The authorities are firm in their determina
tion to praveut auy meeting, and the lead
ers in the attempt to-d'iy will be prosecuted.
WEST INDIES. .
New York. August 6. A Port au Prince
letter of July 21, says President Baex, of
San Domingo, is distributing among Hay
tien insurgents and partisans of the lato
President Sulnave, arms and munitions of
war received from New York, and the Hay-
tien Govcrnraeut in retaliation ordered
5,000 troops to the frontier with orders to
shoot every one found under arras.

statement of the city and bounty debt, which
Mayor Hall an n curies will appear regu
larly on the fij" " every month, is pub
lifhed this morning. It shows tue funded
debt of the city on July 3lst to be $31,331,
70S, and of tbe county, $21,701,350, from
which deducting the sinking fund of $18,
880, B61, there remains a net funded debt of
the city and county, $60,212,3U6. The
temporary debt recoverable by assessments
on property for improvemeut of which the
debt was incurred, is $11,824,500, and
revenue Bonds to be paid from taxes of the
curreut year, $22,709,000 ; debt incurred
for expenses growing out of the late war,
$12,683,000 ; city expenditures during July,
$31,427 for advertising ; $10,891 lor sti
tionery ; $140,552 for salaries ; $ft7.740 ftr
street cleaning ; $10,009 for contingencies.
Five German consulates in this city ure
to be consolidated into one, under tbe title
of the Consulate General of the German

The first claim against tbe United States
filed with the British agent in this city un
der the Treaty of Washington, is that of
James Crutchell, resident in this District,
involving a large sura of money. He is
a British subject, aud our government at
the commencement of the war seized his
Mount Vernon earactory uear tho railroud
depot for military purposes, by which
the machinery wus rendered useless and a
profitable business destroyed.
Louisville, August 7. Tbe election in
this city to-day shows a heavy Republican
gain. Returns from 27 out of 47 precincts
at noon gave Leslie 87 majority. He is
probably 300 ahead in the wuole city at
this hour. w
At Bowling Green at noon Leslie was SO
ahead. This result has greatly disap
pointed the Republicans, who expected the
precincts to give Harlan 300 majority.
New 'York, August 7. Washington
special states that Mr. Fish will soon re
tire, to be succeeded by G. W. Curtis.
An extraordinary statement is published
in the B'orid that Secretary Boutwell was
a defaulter to two million dollars when be
was Commissioner of Internal Revenue.
Washington, D. C, August 7. A letter
has been received from Gon. Spinner, dated
Frankfort-on-the-Main, July 22d, in which
ho says his health is improving and that
be is on the eve of visiting Switzerland.
He' is silent about the new loan. He i ex
pected to return borne the 1st of September.
Subscriptions to the new loan to-day
were $22,650.
CALIFORNIA.
San Franoiaeo, August 7.. The Mechan
ics' Fair Pavilion has been swarming with
workmen all da, but so far not more than
ten per cent, of the goods intended -for ex
hibition are in place. By to-morrow from
bal f to "two-thirds will be arranged, but it
will still require several days to get every
thing into shape. The Boy District Horti
cultural Society have laid out their wing of
the'building as garden, arith grass plots,
flower beds, shrubbery and graveled walks,
producing a very picturesque and pleasing
effect. Tbe Jopancse department is nearly
in order. Agri'ultural and labor saviug
machinery will be largely represented, and
the art gallery will be greatly and infinite
ly better than at any previous fuir. Mcx
zarus' gigantic statue of California is a
prominent object in this gallery, though
seen to a disadvantage from not being ele
vated far above the audience as its propor
tions require. The opening will take place
to-morrow as advertised.
Laura DcForce Gordon is out in the
Morniiuj Independent as candidate for State
Seuator for Sun Joaquin. She calls upou
those who seek to see morality, not money,
rule legislative hails, to rally to ber sup
port. The sale of the California Pacific to the
Ceut'rlil Pacific has been effected . It is said
that on next Thursday pusstngers for the
East will be sent from Sau Francisco over
tbe Vallcjo route.

Court-martial for trial of Communists
opened to-day. Tbe indictments were
read. Some of the prisoners treated
the proceedings with levity, whereup
on tbe Court prohibited tbem from
communicating with each other. Ex
aminatioos will begin to-morrow.
Dublin, Aug. 7. Tbe Royal visitors
left tbe city to-day. Crowds lined tbe
streets they passed through, but not a
cbeer was raised. Tbe people pre
served dead silence, broken only by a
few bisses. Tbe conduct of tbe Prince
at Pbueail Park yesterday, which was
denounced as brutal, baa embittered
the population. Newpapers demand
an investigation.
