In tbe House of Com mons this evening, Gladstone, in reply to a question, said the sixth article of the treaty of Washington prohibit the use of neutral port for renewal or aogmentatioa of supplies to belligerents, only when they are intended for sue against other belliger ents, and not when exported in tbe ordi nary way of eommeroe. This was, he said, the understanding on the part of President Grant and Mr. Schenck. It was under stood, however, that on presentation of tbe rule for acceptance by other powers,' the statement on this point should be clear. , Gladstone stotel be had received, the assent of tbe United Stnte Government to his pro posal to submit these principles of tbe treaty to the European powers for their ac ceptance, lie believed prospective advan tage to- England ' would be immense, and concluded by praising the tone of Ainerice throughout the negHtiatioat. 1 : - ' In tbe House of Lords to-day, Russell, in moving an address to the Crown against 1 theratifieation'of ihe treaty of Washington, said that the arbitrators were boand only by the international British laws, existing at the time of the American war, and ar gued that otherwise England might apply one rule and. America another, aod the ar bitrators still another. This ratification of ' the treaty might be demanded to secure peace, bat it was, be argued, a dangerous -eeedent and an unwise neglect of the duty of England to her American colonies when the flsbing interests were sacrificed, for the treaty was onesided even about the fisheries. Granville said he accepted the discussion but he did not accept Russell's motion, and explained the circumstances attending the negotiation of the treaty, and declared its terms honorable and advantageous to Can ada. Earl Derby, Earl de Grey and Ripon, Lord Cairnes, the Lord Chancellor and tbe Duke of Argyle defended the treaty and Ihe conduct of negotiation. EASTERN HEWS. New Vork, June 13. With What Body Do Tbiy Ri?- Some writers wbo consider tbe edito rial office of tbe Golden Age a theolog ical seminary, occasionally propound to us question more easuistical than profitable. We do not pretend to nn derstand the providence of God, or the economy of the universe, or tbe condi tion of spirits in tbe next worn. ror do we know what satisfactory answer to give to a query addressed to us in tbese words : " What is your opinion as to tbe resurrection of the body ? " It is easy to refer our enquirer to St Paul's views. But what are St. Paul's views 7 He thought a human body in tbe grave was'Jike a seed of wheat iu the ground. There is a sense in which tbi view, which was meant to be tbeo logical, ia also scientific. Tbe body, once buried, shall rise again. That is, it shall decompose in the earth ; it shall mingle wltj tbe soil ; it shall become part of nature's mould ; it shall receive the rain from heaven ; it shall quicken and revive, atom by atom ; it shall struggle op re-germt-nant to tbe surface ; and fioallv it shall appear again to human eyes here in a blade of grass, there in a head of clo ver here in a trailing vine, there in a spreading oak. This is tbe only lei urrection of tbe body in which we have any faith. Now, this explanation may not satisfy the spiritual yearnings of our enquiriog friend ; but after all, rightly looked at, there I something very beautiful and satisfying in that eternal round of nature' transmuta tion, which brings death and mortality to light. Tbaddeus Stevens, by a clause in bis will, bequeathed a sum of money to be annually expended in covering his mother's grave, as be quietly phrased it, " with roses and other cheerful flowers." Our idea of the resurrection of tbe body is that if tbi bequeat (hall be executed accord ing to the testator's filial intent, there will be a gradual rising of tbe sacred dust which he wishes to honor, into tbe very substance and body of tbe Bowers with wnicn ne sougDl to keep it in fragrant and perpetual memory. So death evermore is life, neithen is there any. grave which should not be opened, nor any dead that shall not be taised. Golden Age. Singing is Families. Children are delighted with poetry at an early age; and what is loved in early life cannot be easily effaced in later years. A lady informed us a few days since, that when a very little glii, she bad learned hundreds of hymn and poetical effusions not of a childish, but of a pore and elevated character. This early discipline, she says, ha been a safeguard to her all her life a preservation against sin and folly. Among the German forefathers it was a common practice, in professedly Christian families, to teach their chil dren hymns and spiritual songs. Tbe children bad thus useful employment afforded them to fill op the time which would otherwise have been spent in idleness, if not in something worse. Frequent repetitions of them at inter vals, prompted to efforts to connect the poetry with music, and this gradu ally led them to acquire a taste and cultivate a talent for sioging. To this imple practice may be attributed, in a great degree, the fioely cultivated mu sical talent of tbe German people. Singing in the family adds greatly to the interest of the devotional exercises, especial! y among Children. It makes the ftmily altar and home circle a pleasant place. Tbe influences of vo cal mosio of social character have always been very happy indeed. Show us tbe family where good music is cul tivated, where tbe parents and chil dren are accustomed often to mingle -their voices together in song, and we will show you one, in almost every in stance, where peace, harmony aod love prevail, and where the greater vice have no abiding; place. .MianrrtJD or London. Tbe popu lation of London is now 3,250,000. No other city in tbe world has had so vast population. Babylon wa fif teen mile square, but never bad three million of people, and Rome in ber greatne never had half so many as the present inhabitants of London. Tbe growth of London has been won derful. In 1665, tbe time of the great plague, tbe population was abont 400, 000. Ia 1801, it wa only 958.000 ; forty year after, it wa 1,948,000, aod within the past thirty year It has in creased to three millions and a quar ter. At the same-rate of increase, the people of London will number 5,000, 000 at the end of tho present century. What we call ward are, in the French cities, called. The Common Council io American cit ies is tbe same thing, except that bere we have carried our division of all legislative work between two bouses to such an extent that every council has two branches. Io France there is bnt one, and in cities where the " com mune" ii elected, It power is tbe same a that ot the alderman and Common Council here.
