From the La Grande Democrat of last Saturday we get the following : Two gen tlemen from the mines near Malheur, passed through this city, having with tbem six hundred ounce of dust, worth $17 30 per ounce, the result of sixty days drifting and eleven days washing up. The road across the Blue Mountains is rapidly improving. Grass is growing finely, and excellent pasturage is to be found anywhere in the valley. Several families from the Willamette have lately arrived in this valley. The stage route of the Northwestern Stage Company will soon be located through the Willow Creek country. Hon. James H. Slater writes he will he home about the middle of May. The grain crops of this part of th State will be very large this year. From the Baker City Democrat of April 29th we glean as follows : We are informed by several gentleman that Mr. William J. Goodwin, who has been mining in Quarts Gulch, near Malheur, cleaned np recently and obtained six hundred ounces of dust worth $16 to the ounce ; making a sum to-' tal of $9,600. We learn that within the last few days two new quarts mines have been discovered near Rooster the loose, decomposed quarts of one yielding twenty-five and the other fifty cents to the pan. On the 16th instant a son of J. W. Dwi nelle, Esq., aged only about eighteen months, wandered off from home, got sep arated from his playmates and was drowned In Salmon Creek. Portland. Th Bulletin states that the Fannie Troup was snagged about fire miles above Free port. She will have to be hauled out for repairs. The new: steamship wharf is rapidly approaching completion. Magaxines. A number of the May magasine have been received. Ilarper't eoncludes the life of Frederick the Great in the present number, which will make it invaluable to all its readers. It contains an illustrated account of " Moat Blanc, Monarch of Mountains," also the story of Punch and Judy," happily illus trated. "Th Wistover Estate," and " Along the Florida Reef," are well illus trated. This number contains the usual aunonnt of good light reading. The Owland for May is peculiarly good number, containing the promised ar ticle from Mr. Condon on the " Boeks of the John Day Valley," and the account of the " Washburn expedition to the Yellow stone." It also contains a pleasantly writ ten piece by C. H. Miller, the Grant county Poet, who Is traveling abroad, and write under the affectation ot Joaqu'n Miller Mrs. F. F. Victor furnishes, On the Mex ican Border," a well written account cf adventures among the Apaches in New Mexico. Besides these there are many oth er good articles on various subjeots. tombieSt for May is laid on our table by H. D. Boon, who has all the magaxines and periodicals early on hand. It contains. as the leading illustrated article, the story of the Yelloa stone expedition with sketches of the wild scenery found there. Another illustrated article is ." Reminescences of Charlotte Bronte j" another on " Living American Artiste" promiscsto he of unusual interest. The temaining contributions are in usual variety, and Serihner' holds its own as a candidate for popular favor. We have not time to read its numerous articles to give them proper notice, but it is a Tal nable work, published monthly, that all mechanic can afford to take at the low sub scription price of $1 50 per annum.
