A Boy's Expcj-ic.ioo in Going: to School. A serious h:ise of disease is that viiicii attiu ks a 1 y on a day when he particularly objects to yoinr to school, lie tells Li mother, wit'i the c nfLlino; frankness peculiar to youth, that he does hut feel well this moiuiui;. lie doesn't know what it is, but he is lame in the joints, his head nches, and he doesn't leel a bit fjood. He moves alout slowly; openly re tu it-s food, looks dejected, neg ligent, unhappy. Quite frequently he can be heard to S'gh. But in all his pain lie never forgets the c!ofk. As time ad vances to the hour which marks school time, his symptoms increase, lie doesn't s-iy a word about school to his mother. He feels too dreadful, perhaps, to talk of such things, lie is certainly in a bad way. His sighs increase as the dreaded time approaches, aud the physical symp toms of dec .y become more and more manifest. But the greatest sulToi iiiir he tudures mentally. Fifteen minutes of that time, aad nothing has been said to him about getting ready. He wants to believe he is all riglit; because that is the prompting of hope which is strong in the youthful breast; but yet he refuses t believe he is, because he fears that reac tion of disappointment. Every time he hears his mother's voice he is startled, and every time he detects her looking to ward him he feels his heart sink within him. It is a hard thing, indeed, to ap pear outwardly languid, li.-tless and drooping when inwardly one is a, roaring furuace of agony. Bathe does it, and noes u nuimraoiy. it now lacKS nve minutes of the quarter. Still she says nothing. His nervousness is almost maddening. Four minutes, three min utes, two minutes. One minute. Still she makes no sign. Will his reason for sake him? It is the quarter. Now he should start, according to custom. Oiie would think he had every encouragement now, but he knows that at even live minutes later lie can make school by hurrying. The agony of the suspense becomes ex quisite. He trembles all over aud he cannot help it. His hair is moist with perspiration. It seems as if he would give up everything and sink into the grave if he could but know the result. How slowly the clock moves. It stares at him with exasperating stoniness. The ten minutes are reached. He breathes easier. Not a word has been said to him about school. His mother sees that he is too ill to g and she sympathizes with him. Heaven bless her. DM ever a boy have such a noble, good mother as this! Visions of sunny fields and shady woods and running streams unfold be fore him. stirring the very depths of his soul, and lilliug his eyes with tears of Great Guns. General Bennett, the Chief of Ord nance, in his annual report, recommend. a large ir.crease of appropriations for the use of the Ordnance Department for the li-cal year, over those of the previous year, lie sa5s: ''The limited appropriations made by Congress, much below the esti mates submitted by tlm bureau, have, in many instances, prevented the supply ing of the army on the frontier with that superior qual'ty of ordnance store, which tne nature of such service demands, and in the attempt to utilize the material re maining on hand from the late war, every care, and effort has been exercised in its selection and preparation to meet the wants of troops, but with more or less dissatisfaction inseparable from the use of old material and obsolete patterns. Explanations to this eSTect have had to be made to the Olivers iu command of troops in defence of the action of this Depurt- A Smart Little Rooster. "You remember what you promised, my lads? no backing out, now!"' "Yep! we said we'd heard the moral to a story. But don't mike it mean us." "Not mean you.' of course I shall. That's ju.-t what big folks want about sermous they wa it the minister to make a snug fit for somebody else. But my morals always go right to the mark, like au Indian's arrow." ' "Oh! teil us 'bout an Injun!'' "Not any, my boy, there are no morals about the Indians so the traders say. I will tell you about the smnt little rooster." Oice there was an old hen who had a nice brood of young chickens seven tiny little fellows, who w ere n.,tbig enough to wear "feathers, but had soft, yellow down all over 'em. Tiieir eyes were bright as betd and always closed at early bedtime; their pink bills never ment, where the responsibility for limit- opened except to let out a peep-peep, or ed appropriations cannot rest." The report reconjmeuds the retention of the Benccia Arsenal, on the Pacific; Ilock Island Arsenal, in the Mississippi Valley; the National Armory, at Spring field, .Mass.; the Frankfurt Arsenal, Penn sylvania; and the erection of au arsenal in the vicinity of New Yoik out of the proceeds of those not required. The Al leghany, Watervliet, NVateitown and Washington ArsenaU should be sold. The Indianapolis, Kennebec, Fort Monroe, Augusta and San Antonio Arsenals should be ret tine. I as places of deposit, repair and isue. Up.m the subject of small arms, Gen. Bennett says that he deems it of the most vital importance that the manufacture of arms be steadily continued, in quantities sufficient to render a gradual accumula tion of them in store a certainty. That a better arm than the Springfield may some day be invented is not at all im probable, and the magazine gun will no doubt be the arm of the future, but until such an arm, suitable for the military ser- let in a bug or something else nice to eat, and their little leis went trotting around after the hen all day long. They never had to be called twice tocome straight to bed, but snuggled under their mamma's feathers as quick as she called; and they never kicked oil the clothes, nor played circus, nor tore the bed to pieces, nor ouarreled. nor auvthinir. Aud when she'd clucked 'em one story about a hawk and another about a weasel, they never teased her for one more about a funny old torn turkey who swelled up till he bu'st, trying to look as big as he felt. And iu the morning they didn't snoozle way past the second bell, and only got up when they heard there was pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast. They were a very nicely behaved family of chickens, you'd better believe. . But as they grew up a little, and got about to the pin-feather age, one of them he was a young rooster came to think he Knew more than his mother. Did vou ever hear of such a thing? a chicken only two months old s'posing he knew i rl i .' I lined "John" Like a great shock the beautiful pict ures fall away and he is shot from the pinnacle of hope into the abyss of de spair. There is no mistaking the voice. "Mercy sakes! here you are not ready for school. Come, start your boots." "I do not feel well enouirh to r to school," he whines, hardly realizing the dreadful change that has come upon him with such blighting force and swiftness. "I guess you ain't dying quite," is the heartless reply. "And if you ain't at school you will go galloping over the neighborhood. Hurry, I tell you " "Hut it is almost 9 o'clock, aud I'll be late," he protests in desperation "Late," &he repeats, looking at the clock. "You have plenty of time. The clock is nearly a quarter of an hour fast.' Merciful heavens! He goes down be fore the terrible blo.v in a flash. A quar ter of au hour fast! Bleeding at every pore of his heart, stunned by a shock which was as terrible as unexpected, he crawls inside of his iacket and under his h it, and starts on his way in a dazed manner that is pitiful to behold. JJai- lury Neics. OldLkatiiek Made Into New. On old-.used leather, says a Scotch paper. there have beeu various schemes of utili zation. I5y dissolving the leather by steam and certain acids, it is possible to produce printing rollers for cotton fab rics: but it seems tuetorabie to cut me leather in pieces, mix them with a ce menting liquid, and then squeeze tin whole into a mass of different thicknesses, accordiug to the process required, sucii as material tor making up the soles an.i heels of boots and shoes. With a quauti ty of paste and the force of a steam en gine, shreds are made to assume the ap pearance of cakes of leather technically, pancakes or pasted stock which are largely used in the wholesale shoe man ufacture of Massachusetts. There is another method in that country of using up shaviugs and scraps of leather. These are ground to a powder resembling coarse snuff, and this powder is then mixed with certain gnms and other substances so thoroughly that the whole m iss be- comes a kiiui oi nieueu leatner. in a short time this dries a little, and is rolled out to the desired thickness, per liips one-tweiitn ot an men; it is now quite solid, and is said to be entirely wa terpro t. lucre are various processes patented for melting down leather waste a;:d preducmg large sheets ot artificial leather, posses-ing waterproof qualities, but we have not space to go into account of them militia of the country is represented un der the head of "armameut of fortifica tions." Au estimate of $9.jO,000 is sub mitted for the next fiscal year. The conversion of smooth-bore guns into ethcient eisrht-inch rilles has progressed satisfactorily. The coiled wrouinit-irou tubes, used in the comer iou, have been imported, but a trial of a gun with a tube of domestic manufacture lias given the best results, and proved conclusively that our product is equal to the imported. Notwithstanding the large experience in such work iu Eng land s shop, dependence can now be placed on the private enterprise and skill ot our own people lor the tubes tor eight inch rules, and in the preparation ot guns ot that nature aud material our la bor and machinery will meet all require inents. The eig!it-inch t itle, with Ameri can tubes, has successfully stood 500 rounds with battering charges, and re mains in serviceable condition, up to date". 1 nree guns of this class have been tested with the most satisfactory result two eight-ir.ch and one of nine-inch calibre- all converted from ten-inch smooth bores. Thoroughbred Percheron Horses. The second shipment of this celebrated race of horses to this Coast by Mr. Sackrider is now upon exhibition sit the Record Sta bles, on Market street, opposite Seventh, San Francisco, and is composed of six beau tiful stallions, ranging from l.OOi) to '2,000 lbs. in weight. It' might be inferred from their weight that thev'are unsuitable for any but draft purposes. This is not the case, but upon the contrary they are tine travellers, eteppimr oil' at a" lively gait, some of them eoinr in four minutes, and standing up un der a rapid and lon.j continued travel luiiy cuual to horses of lighter build. Although but recently opened to the public it is taking immensely, as well it may, with its wonder ful collection of relies from all parts of the world. An inspection of the skeleton of one of that extinct race, the Mastodon, is alone worth the price of admission. To the young especially we commend the Museum as a resort not to be omitted from the list of places to he visited while in the city.
