Amethyst left Esqnimalt on the 2d to convey Farl and Coun tess Dufferin from San Francieco to Victoria. At San Francisco on the 3d, in the billiard tournament, Sexton beat Slossen 33 points. The grain crop in Rogue river valley will le light this, .year, but more than enough for tho homo de mand will be raised. There aro G,000,000 members and attendants of the Baptist churches in this country, and it is proposed to raise an educational fund of $G.- 000,000 by dollar contributions. Ttalph Geer, brought tho States man a specimen of wheat which beats all up to date. Twenty-eight stalks are produced from one grain of wheat, each containing nearly 100 grains. A call has been issued to the Linn county people to ' meet at Albany court house on the 11th "to consult in relation to freights and to propose plans to remedy existing evils in re gard to the navigation of the Wilam ette river." A little daughter of James Ed wards, of Sodaville, while jumping over a smouldering pile of saw dust, at Lebanon on the 2d inst., fell into it. literally roastinar her lees and burning her feet so severely that her toe nails fell off. The proposed water ditch to Inde pendence will be surveyed after har vest. They entered one of the wards, whnn Brougham introduced his admirer to the occupant of ono of the conches the remnants of a once beautiful woman, now wasted away to mere skin and bone. Then he left, them alone. The sick one took the earl's hands and said she wished to teii her a story of her own life which was a short one. She had become enam ored of an actor, had written him perfumed notes, had met him, loved him, surrendered her honor into lm hands, and been betrayed. Spurned by her family, shesougkt tLe streets, and found degradation, despair, and death. The young girl was horriued, but understood the application. She never saw Brougham again, and re turned home sadder and wiser.
