Important Ti:.xsri.:!i. Last Friday the negotiations which have been l end ing for some time between the O. S. S. Co. and the W. II. T. A: L. Co. were brought to a close, and the boats, basin, water privileges."wharves, etc., belong ing to the former company have been transferred to the latter. S. S. Co. in and to all their prop erty on. the upper Willamette river. The purchase price, as stated in the bill of sale, was s-'.i'.ooo; but we suppose tcro must have I teen some other valu able consideration not stated, as this was not near the value of the property transferred, but we are unable to learn of any other at present. 1'y this trans fer the O. S. N. Co. are virtually in pos session of all the important steamboat linos in the State. The W. 1J. T. A: L. Co. was the ostensible purchaser, but the O. S. X. Co. has the controlling interest in that corporation, and it mav bo said that both t lie Willamette and Columbia rivers are now completely under their control. The only opposition left on either river are the City of Salem and Ohio, beloptring to Capt. Seolt, and thev will either be bouirhtoti or run out. o Mrstoix i nn ait;. Tho old Oregon City Prass Hand has been reorganized under the lyydership of Mr. Thos. Mil ler, with Prof. Seliger as instructor. C. has been afilieted with chills latel- and has a rather serious turn of mind. While laboring under this lit of melancholy he undertook to er forni the rite of baptism upon himself, and we give the particulars just as we heard them, last Tuesday morning, as the aforesaid umbra was putting on his dean linen, he had it over his head, and was tearing around the room trv incr to get his arms through the sleeve's, when those unfortunate appendages came in contact with a pitcher of water which was resting nuietly on the mantle-piece. The pitcher failed to with stand the shock and it came down with a rush, drenching tho church from head, to foot. The rest of the scone our quill fails of words to describe, and we lea e our readers to inquire of tho victim of misplaced confidence. LiXTuri:. Mr. 1. H. Wells of the Willamette University of Salem, gave an interesting lecture last Saturday evening at the rooms of the Y.M.C. A., to a large and respectable audience. The subject was "Minions of an Un veiled City," and the speaker treated it in a masterly stylo. The gentleman sought to represent the underground workings of society, and that tho groat masses are under the control of a few, ami are shaped in opinion.-; and tastes in the interest of a few. This, we are told, was the first attempt in the lecture field, and we must say that he acquitted himst 1 f with credit, ami we hope that v e may have, the pleasure of listening to him again, at some future time. KOBUIXU GllAVKS OF Fl.OWEIlS. Complaints have been made lately that llowers are taken in quantities from the graves at the cemetery, indepen dent of tho desecration to the dead.it is just as much a theit to take these trib utes of the living to t hose "gone over to the great majority," as it is to steal ilowi rs from tim garden of a neighbor. We are surprised to hear of people from whom we expected, if not bettor judgment, at least better hearts, com mitting such a downright sacrilege. To rob tho dead of those oll'erings from livinir friends is a most contemptible piece of business, and we hope that it will cease immediate". Pit em I vM Jiisr. K. M. It is a subject of honest pride to the proprietors of Hostetter's Litters, that no claims have ever been advanced in its behalf that could not be corrobor ated by ample proofs, but most assur edly had such been tho case they could have expected nothing l etter than that a preparation bolstered up bv' state ments of the same stripe as those in d.ulged in by the proprietors of cheap local bitters and inaloohoye rubbish, would speedily die of inanition.
